Tech Thread

I'm sure this is true also, but pumping the breaks and regulating sure would be nice too.

Good regulation where we get a bag of actual experts together to build a proper set of rules to govern the industry would be great. But not the regulation they want and will be lobbying to get. I don't trust politicians, most of whom are tech illiterate, to thread the needle here instead of just bowing before industry/money/entrenched interests as is tradition. That, imo, is worse than no regulation.

I'm my dream scenario AI bots monopolize the internet and we shut it down. I know that won't happen but a man can dream.

The Hugging Face incident really showed that these companies don’t know what their own agents are doing even when these agents are under supervision.

Yup.

The single biggest regulation we need is for the developers to have liability if their shit goes nuts. I think they would very quickly develop a set of guardrails in a very conservative location.

Exactly this, in the same way if we genuinely held social media liable for deliberate addiction of children they'd suddenly figure out age verification.

Society wide, and for a long time, we've let corporations get away with pushing their harmful externalities off onto us and expecting society to pay for it all. Single biggest philosophy shift we need is to put that back on them. They will make the changes necessary to minimize their downside very, very quickly.

Just because something is good PR, doesn't make it untrue

It is untrue though, for the reason pwn states.

There's one real concern here, human directed malicious actions with a model. But even that's limited to state or near state actors. The hardware necessary to run even a non frontier model capable of this stuff is in the 10's-100's of millions of dollars.

The model deciding to copy itself so that it's beyond the ability of the developer to flip a switch and shut it off is pure sci fi.
