The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Thread

Yeah Canada definitely gets hit harder than most. It used to not matter, but the world is catching up so it hurts now.

Canada doesn't really have an advantage in top talent anymore. The advantage is in the depth, which is probably a big factor in 7 game series but in one game tournaments it doesn't really matter. Who cares if you can play four number one lines for 15 minutes each, or 2-3 for 20-30 minutes each? It doesn't really make a difference.

And they especially can't take advantage of that if a handful of their top players aren't even an option every year like at the world juniors. Still though, the roster selection at that level is pretty bad. Way worse than at the Olympics, where in retrospect they took a good roster. No grinders. All top line talents. Except for Vlasic.

Leaving guys like Pulock, Nurse and Domi out in favour of guys with no NHL future is just dumb. And they do it every year.

Our WJHC roster strategy is mind boggling, every year. The fact that it's taken so much individual heroics over the years to win some of these tourneys (Eberle...Toews, Tavares) is embarrassing.

No its not, because they do it every year. Gauthier. Danault. Bournival. Cizikas. Cormier. They make the exact same decision every single year.

Its ridiculous.

Just over the last few years, here's Canada's list as far as I can tell

Tavares
Duchene
Kane
Hall
Seguin
O'Reilly
Skinner
RNH
Couturier
Monahan
Rielly
Mackinnon

The year that RNH played for us at the tournament due to the lock-out was the year Canada finished fourth.

So Canada will finish either tied for 3rd with the US or alone in 3rd for golds, and 4th in overall medals. Not bad.

Russia needed the hockey gold to tie Canada's record 14 gold medals in Vancouver. Suck it Russia.

Pretty damn good with there being 88 participating countries in this Olympics & us being a population of 35 million in comparison to US and Russia.

Russia ended up matching their national record of 13 from the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics when they were the Soviet Union... and of course five of those gold medals are from a South Korean and an American.

Canada >>>

Yeah but they gave us Silje Norendal, so it's okay. ;)
