I think it’s more of an overvaluing D problem. He shouldn’t be scared to lose one of Holl or Dermott. Especially since Seattle would more likely pluck Dermott, and yet we protected Holl.
 
The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced Dubas signed Dermott to make him more attractive to Seattle (possibly after speaking to their GM). Then he grabbed McCann as a cherry on top. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out, but I think it will work out perfectly. But maybe I'm too optimistic!

Solid take. I love Dermott but I think it’s the best result for the team if he got plucked. That said, I’m holding out hope that there’s some second half of Dubie’s plan that we haven’t seen unfold yet.

Yeah, but if you trade a Timex for a Rolex, knowing you have to give your current Rolex to your new bastard cousin for free because your mom is making you, then it seems like good value if you like having a Rolex.

They didn't add McCann in a vacuum. The added him knowing exactly who they were protecting in the expansion draft, and for that exact reason. If Kerfoot was exempt they wouldn't have made that deal. They found a cheap way to ensure they didn't lose a key forward, or if they do they have a replacement. It was an expansion draft move.

Is McCann good? Yes. Would Dubas have traded any of the 4 protected forwards or dmen for him if that was the cost? I highly doubt it.

Also, while McCann was ridiculous this year according to all the models, don't forget about this part of it:

Over the last two years he had a 53.1 xGF%, and a 61.4 GF%. His value has been inflated by likely unsustainable production. He had a 69% GF% this year.

Dom's model projects him as a 1.2 GSVA, $5 mill, second line forward this year and Hyman as 2.0, $7 mill, first line winger FWIW.

So, out of curiosity, what’s your own opinion of Kerfoot?

Do you agree that he should be considered a “key forward”? And that not only should they keep him, it was also worth trading a prospect and pick to protect him from the expansion draft?
 
I think Kerfoot was very bad last year, is entirely replaceable, and should be replaced as 3rd line center because he is not a center. He's a solid middle 6 winger that is good on special teams, and that is how he should be used if kept.

I also think he is much more valuable to the team in the short term than Filip Hallandar, and so I get why they would sacrifice Hallandar to keep the roster intact from the expansion draft, if that is how it plays out, and I don't really get what is so bad about that.

I would obviously much rather Seattle takes Kerfoot over Dermott or McCann.
