McCann makes $3m. Hyman was a good pull, but that’s not something you’re likely to replicate several times in one roster. How did they get hyman? How did they just get McCann?

I think it’s more of an overvaluing D problem. He shouldn’t be scared to lose one of Holl or Dermott. Especially since Seattle would more likely pluck Dermott, and yet we protected Holl.People are criticizing Dubas for not valuing McCann properly even though he's the GM that bid highest for him.
Not easy to do and without some injuries and cap shenanigans they wouldn’t have had them all at the same time.Tampa did it with gourde, Coleman and gudpro.

Solid take. I love Dermott but I think it’s the best result for the team if he got plucked. That said, I’m holding out hope that there’s some second half of Dubie’s plan that we haven’t seen unfold yet.The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced Dubas signed Dermott to make him more attractive to Seattle (possibly after speaking to their GM). Then he grabbed McCann as a cherry on top. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out, but I think it will work out perfectly. But maybe I'm too optimistic!
Absolutely fair. His past year of GM-ing outside the draft is certainly subject to harsh criticism. Hopefully he's learned from his mistakes.I hope it works out, but Dubas doesn't get the benefit of the doubt with me anymore.
Leafs were really good this past year btw.
I feel like you continue to gloss over the fact that we added a really good player and are losing that player.
If you trade someone a Timex for a Rolex and then lose the Rolex the next day you still lost a Rolex, not a Timex. That you only had it for a day doesn't change the value of the thing you had at the time it became lost.
Yeah, but if you trade a Timex for a Rolex, knowing you have to give your current Rolex to your new bastard cousin for free because your mom is making you, then it seems like good value if you like having a Rolex.
They didn't add McCann in a vacuum. The added him knowing exactly who they were protecting in the expansion draft, and for that exact reason. If Kerfoot was exempt they wouldn't have made that deal. They found a cheap way to ensure they didn't lose a key forward, or if they do they have a replacement. It was an expansion draft move.
Is McCann good? Yes. Would Dubas have traded any of the 4 protected forwards or dmen for him if that was the cost? I highly doubt it.
