The Mother****ing Off Season Thread

But I still don't think that means you jump at trading Kadri for whichever RHD you can find to plug that hole.

Agreed. Unless you can get a legit good top pairing RHD there is no sense in trading Naz. I am by no means looking to deal Naz. It just makes more sense to move him than Kappy, Johnsson, Sandin, Lilly etc. if you can actually manage to find a legit top pair D.

Yup, and boy wonder and his psycho father are also likely aware of the Leafs' wish to expedite these negotiations. Which is exactly why they are pulling the tactics they are.

Important lesson learned from these last few contract squabbles. Athletes by and large don't give a shit about anything other than their bottom line. Anything else is pure lip service. Don't want to hear a guy like Marner talk about how he "loves Toronto" or any of that nonsense after he inevitably caves on his ridiculous demands. Just have to see how much his contract stand-off will affect the rest of our club and what the GM can do to improve the team in the off-season. Either way, Mitch Marner doesn't really care. As long as he gets his.

yup, none of our big three have really shown any willingness to 'sacrifice for the greater good' or any such thing. disappointing after Tavares left money on the table, but not surprising.

I mean I don't really blame them, they're allowed to try and maximize their earnings, but as a fan, it sucks. we're going to lose assets because all of our youngsters want to get PAID.

I think we will solve our top-pair D issue not by finding an established 'top pair' guy, but by Dubas finding someone who has earned but not received an opportunity for greater responsibility and minutes. and I trust the doobieman to find the right guy.

Yup. Naz is really their only trade chip if they want to acquire a top pair d. No first rounder, Lilly and sandin are essentially untouchables, kappy and Johnny are about to sign and it's beneficial to keep them until they get into the 5-6 mil range (next contract).

If you think that is fair market value for Mitch, there is no point engaging with you. That statement just demonstrates a total lack of understanding of the free agent market and the role comparable players and their contracts play.

No its not. What exactly do you think is fair for a 90 point player that led the league in p/60, and his few comps are all $9+ mill? Dom's model projects his value at $9.6 mill over the next 7 years. Evolving Wild's model predicts 8 years @ $9.8 mill. And all this completely ignoring the shifting landscape to paying players earlier rather than later. I don't see how you could say 6 years $10 mill is so far off base that it demonstrates a total lack of understanding and doesn't warrant discussion.

Then I guess you shouldn’t engage with everyone else that posted afterwards either.

You mean this season yes?
I agree that's a good possibility, but since I've been saying this is a sideways year, I'll say that mostly, Dubas uses this year to see what all of the kids on D can do so he can act accordingly when the cap goes up and the books open up.

Unless it's a trade involving Marner, then I expect something big.

I still like method as a defensive partner for one of the kids and a partner for late period and game situations.

Donskoi - average third line center - Kapanen becomes a real good third line imo. Real good. Hard part is finding that mediocre 3c at a manageable rate. As I said, bracco would be a potential trade chip for that.

we should probably spend that money on a center instead of donskoi.

Reminder the RFA interview period opens at 12:01am on the 26th and closes at 12pm on July 1. Marner among the group expected to have multiple team visits.

Wow. This guy has put it all on the line. LOL

I think that was Mindz. Even a year in as a Hab.

Yep, didn't think he was worth the contract. Scored 22 points in his contract year, 26 point pace in the first year of the new contract, and then 28 in the 2nd year of the deal. Looked a hell of a lot like you guys giving #2 money (which it was at the time) for a #3-4 RHD.

Last 2 seasons have made me look bad on that prediction, but "even a year in as a Hab", it was a good looking call. At the time, better and more experienced defenders like Edler (5.0), Johnson (6.0), Mike Green (6.0), Hjalmarsson (4.1), Burns (5.7), Vlasic (4.25) were signing deals in that same price range.

I didn't even know my guy played hockey.

Who off the bargain bin/scrap heap is of interest? I figure that's about the only place we'll be able to fill our depth.

Tim Heed would be worthwhile if they can't upgrade elsewhere on their d. You can only trust him to be a third pair d, but there's a bit of a chance he's better than that. Low risk move if he's cheap enough.
