The New Division

I actually think the deal is fine. It's not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. Cap's gonna skyrocket.

The whole "NHL team must be right because NHL team" argument is hilarious though.
Question it all you want - but Leaf fans seem to have an irrational hate for Cowen, likely because of the whole draft conversation between Murray and Burke.

Cowen put up 5gls/17pts as a 20 year old rookie. He's easily capable of having a 25pt season while practicing defense first. That alone is worth $3m.

How can you say it isn't there? He hasn't even had the ability over the past 12 months to prove himself.

His play two seasons ago was excellent for us as 21 year old defenseman.

Year 1 - overpaid
Year 2 - reasonable
Year 3 - reasonable
Year 4 - underpaid.

He has untapped potential. Unless we're in the business of writing off 22 year olds that lost a season to injury.

I see a player who has played a sheltered bottom pair role in the NHL. That's how the Sens coach has used him.

He doesn't have an elite skillset. He will never be point producer.

He's not the type of player you pay based on 'potential' imo.

Hey, I just question the absurdity of saying something like "If he was worth less, an NHL team wouldn't have given him x". That essentially means you can never call into question whether a player is being paid too much on these boards. All players are being paid what they're worth because an NHL team decided to give them that much.

He has potential. But he hasn;t shown enough to make you think that kind of contract has value.

Its a contract based purely on untapped potential.

When it comes to some GM's, sure. UFA's get overpaid alot because teams get desperate.

But Ottawa isn't going to just toss $3m at the guy based on his draft position because they like spending money.

If Cowen was drafted in the 2nd/3rd round and he had the same resume as he has now, he comes nowhere close to 3M.

It is a draft position salary.
There is also a reason why he was drafted in the 1st round. He's a monster.

Chara, as a 23 year old put up a 11 point campaign over 82 games. ELEVEN. Big men take longer to figure it out (and some never do, of course).

Surely I just didn't read this.

Tyler Myers had his best season as a 20 yr old. He's pretty big too from what I've been told.

Chara was so ****ing big that his skating was turrible when he first entered the league, that's what changed. He grew into his size. Cowen is much smaller than Chara was, and much better filled out at a young age than Chara was.

Can't ****ing believe I just read that.

Chara made 600K during that 9 point season. 1M when he joined the Sens.

Pay him when he figures it out.

Chara was 24 when he joined the Sens, and made $1m in 2001. 12 years later you think he's worth $1.5m.

Look, if you thought he was worth $2.5m or so then I wouldn't agree...maybe the Sens are paying a small premium for what he can bring, but to say he's worth $1.5m on the low end is stupid.

My point is that not all players are the same. Circumstances are different. Just because Schenn didn't make it doesn't mean Cowen won't.

Nope, but you said "Unless you think he's reached his potential at 20" like we hadn't just seen a very similar player picked even higher than Cowen do just that. It's not all that unreasonable.

He's a bottom pair dman and he should be paid bottom pair money.
