The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

I think McKenna is a wonderful gift but not cant’t miss. Very few #1s are can’t miss
I think this is a difference in definition between us. I'm saying he's can't miss future ppg guy and first line winger. I don't think I've seen anyone with his profile not become a ppg+ guy. And I don't see that with any of the d re: can't miss top pair guy.

What if he’s Taylor Hall?

the only ones that fail are the ones that didn't have the production to justify 1st overall or those who are lazy punkasses off the ice - and by all reports mckenna is very hard worker off the ice.

Perfect. That’s what I wanted to know
It would be a very bad miss. But that is what I was referring to when I said can't miss. Hall was also a ppg+ first line winger. It's not a super high bar, but I can't say the same about any of the d in this draft having anywhere near that floor.

No one wants to trade Knies or Nylander for a Darren Raddysh or Rasmus Andersson obviously. The guys they'd trade him for would never hit free agency.
Point is, you don't need the super duper elite dman if it costs you Knies, when you can get one of the other guys who are just a step down for nothing. The difference between Harley and one of them is going to be negligible compared to the difference between Knies and his replacement.

I really don't want to live in the timeline where we don't draft McKenna and then have to compare who we did draft and whatever other bullshit assets we got against what McKenna does until we're in our 60s.

Knies' replacement in this example is the d or center that you trade him for tho. And if you really want to overpay for a 30 year old ufa, you can do that too and have both players! You aren't subtracting anyone. You're rebalancing your portfolio! That feels like a ch1ism.

Slaf is fine. Never had McKenna upside obviously but Slaf had a solid year. More productive than William Nylander at the same age.
So don't take the winger? Because he will be fine and compare to an 8OP?

If McKenna turns into another Nylander or Marner, yeah, I am good.
