The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

It's highly unusual and unrealistic for a team that wants to win now to trade one of its best players, who also happens to be the youngest of its best players, and signed to a cheap long deal, to another team in an effort to improve. It's difficult to fathom such a deal. Not impossible, but very, very unlikely.

Which is why they would be getting a supposed #2C in retained Pettersson back as part of the (much bigger) package. Again, depends on the risk appetite on someone like EP but it certainly isn't difficult to fathom. But I agree that a big blockbuster trade like that isn't likely to happen, they just don't anymore...

I think I’d rather a 1D over 1W if org need is equal

I don't think its equal.

Stenberg had the best 17 year old season all time in the U20 league, and 6th best 18 year old season all time, third best since 1990 behind 21 games of Nylander and D. Sedin. He's a guaranteed star.

Way more risk with the dmen becoming stars.

Its like which one of Hanifin, Provorov or Werenski do you take instead of Marner? Maybe one would have been a good pick. Marner was a guarantee.

Also I think Marner and Stankoven showed this year that organizations shouldn't be scared of moving high skilled wingers to center. Especially if they are competitive and good defensively.

Reid's going to be really good too. After him though, I would go Stenberg at #4. I love these Swedes, and he'll be a good one.

I've got Malhotra and Stenberg basically even but with Malhotra's upside being a big PPG+ horse of a centre. A little worried about his skating, but only a little. I still struggle with Stenberg's lack of explosive skill or speed becoming an elite player on the top end and this is where you swing for elite players. Stenberg looks very ~30 yr old Marian Hossa-ish, except Hossa was 6'1 210 and not 5'11 185. Sebastien Aho if he played wing. Which is a really nice player and any team would be happy to have him, but I'll take the 6'2-6'3 215+ pound #1C over that if they're otherwise equal in impact.
