The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

it always matters.
I mean it really doesn't.

In no world are the Leafs going to be in a cap crunch this season.

If the team still likes the player, give him a season under a non Berube coach ( this applies to Maccelli as much as it does the players people like as well). If you dont, move on, and find a guy that fits what you like elsewhere in the middle 6 wing

I'm ambivalent to it, but I wouldn't mind seeing what he can do on a team that stresses speed, puck movement, and possession over digging, dumping, standing, and long D.

Same with Robertson really. I just want to see what they look like playing with players who they can compliment, doing the things within their skill sets.

I think this is the correct attitude.

Trust in Chayka to determine if either dude deserves another chance in the new system.

He knows MM and should be able to make a determination on him, and honestly Robertson has had enough chances for the same determination.

Just trust the GM, and dont stress too much. The only must move off the roster is the Italian Tree and depending what you think of Rielly, maybe him

I don’t see how you pay maccelli $4 mill even though we have a ton of cap space.

If you want to keep him you take your chances and try to work something out.

AFP has him at 2 years $3 mill. I’d do 1 year $2 mill ish max
I mean i get it as a general practice, i just dont see how it matters specifically for next season

Yeah, this I agree with. Decline the QO and sign him at a lower AAV if you want to keep him.

No way they qualify maccelli at that price cuz noone will pay him that as UFA but a 2yr extension at a lower rate makes sense.

Also agree that Lorentz is a plus 4th liner and the little bit of money over minimim is meaningless.

Is Durzi still a name that makes sense?

Also, getting Raddysh probably means you wont be the dummy team that goes nuts for Byrum

With some of the names probably available, I'd rather aim higher tbh. Hronek is probably available, the Brandt Clarke extension is going to be a fist fight by most accounts, Spence is probably available, Winnipeg is a Helly trade request away from blowing it up and they have some under rated guys on their blueline, Mehta isn't dumb enough to give Dougie away, but Dougie is probably out there and available as well.

Durzi makes sense if it's in a package with Hayton to bring the acquisition price down a bit, assuming that Utah doesn't want to continue paying him 6 million. As a stand alone answer to our 2nd pairing RHD issue, I'd prefer to aim higher.

I think Utah makes sense as a Larkin/Trochek destination, and i can see them taking a non return for a Durzi/Hayton package to move off the money

Considering the need at 3LC, if Jenner is too much term/money would you want a Jason Dickinson? who is legit great defensively but probably offers nothing offensively really. I imagine a 4AAV ish for him cause of the derth of C available.

Yeah, no more Kampfs for the 3LC spot, please.

We have to be able to do better in that spot than an offensive black hole. Carolina's 3LC was Jordan Staal. Vegas's was Tomas Hertl. Florida got 9 goals & 35 points out of Anton Lundell during their two Cup runs.

If you get zilch offensively out of that spot in your lineup, which by extension means his wingers probably aren't producing much at 5-on-5 being centered by an offensive black hole, it's too much pressure on your top guys in the playoffs.

I mean, he's better than Kampf, not a complete zero offensively necessarily, but also not great.

The problem you have is no one on the roster at the moment can handle the toughs at the C position unless you want to run Auston into the ground

It also severely limits what kind of wingers you can put him with. Take a good 3C who is dominant in controlling play/possession and has some offensive chops and you don't need 2 no event wingers with him for the line to do anything it's designed to do. You can slot in at least one winger who might have some defensive shortcomings because the 3C is doing that heavy lifting for the line while supporting offensive play. A super Kampf 3C turns the whole line into a dump and chase fiesta of no event hockey.
