The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

He can't now because he got called out for it initially and did like a 1/4 walkback ("If you read the article I never say he's definitively leaving") and also said "I stand by everything that was printed".

Even when we get a decent reporter in this city they all eventually turn to shit.

Feel like this story is probably *technically not untrue* but no more than any franchise centre whose team just got new management also wants to see the direction when considering his future.

Luckily Chayka made crystal clear there’s no rebuild here, they’re going for it, and then we won the draft lottery.

I would have taken the report slightly more seriously if he said he may ask for a trade this summer. But to say he may not even report to Toronto is dumb and obviously wrong.

The whole thing is deeply shit on CJ's part. The way he wrote it, the way he framed it, the way he's defended it is all amatuer hour shit. He's a tip off from a hot dog vendor away from being Simmons bad.

Matthews confirmed it himself. He said it in his own words. His decision depends on how he feels new management is running and how the team looks.

There's your report, straight from the source. If you're gonna say he may not report to Toronto THIS fall and your source is super duper elite, then show some balls and tell us that he may ask for a trade. Because obviously what he said is bullshit. He's under contract with Toronto and he's not gonna forfeit his salary.

Oh I don't doubt that CJ got a real answer from Austons people about how happy he was at the moment. But I do doubt that he's gotten much of an update since Brad was fired and we won the lottery.

The way CJ is framing it all though is a horrific sell job on what was probably a fairly boiler plate answer from someone in Austons orbit.

But you see...if CJ does that than someone from Austons camp refutes it and CJ looks like a dipshit. It's way easier to take the same bit of unhappiness from Auston and leave all of that other stuff unstated and vague.

"Oh I never said he wasn't going to report!"

Fucking clown.

Yeah they are very careful with their words. Like stock gurus on twitter. They're never wrong because they never actually commit to anything!

"Before committing to another season in Toronto, he wants to see a roster that has been meaningfully upgraded through trades and free agency. "

What does this even mean? He's under contract, by definition, he already committed. Does this mean he won't report? Will ask for a trade? Will hold out if they don't trade him and forfeit salary? We don't know. But that's by design. They toss some vague shit out there and expect us to fill in the blanks.

All those anti-Leaf "reporters" tasked with covering the Leafs were licking their chops heading into the draft lottery and all the potential negative shit they could flood the zone with (imagine their drafts folder). Now they're left picking up the pieces after a result nobody really expected.

I don't think there was ever any even remote threat of matthews trying to force something, but obviously the state of the team and management would always have been a huge part of his next contract negotation. And only an idiot wouldn't have concerns about what treliving and berube were doing.

all the media reports clearly use blatant spin words to draw that out into an implication that matthews was threatening to leave.
