I have heard all of the wrong noises coming from people in this organization for the last 5-6 years. The constant drum beat of "must be harder to play against, moar leadership, long defencemen, playoff hockey!!!" etc, etc, etc. I'm struggling to find a reason to be upset when I've heard all of the right noises, first from Pelley at his season ender and then today from Chayka.

Chayka's "it's like jumping on a moving train" line from today is absolutely correct though. There's a wide gap between sounding competent and being competent. We need someone competent to get a lot done over the next 10-12 weeks. I'll judge him on that, but the organization making the right noises out of their mouths after so many years making the wrong noises is encouraging.

Our last smart guy would have gotten us E Karlsson for less than we paid for Carlo... let hope the new "smart guy" can take advantage of another team looking to dump an asset (hamilton) or needing to change of scenery a player (E Pettersson)

In an ideal scenario where we get the 1st overall pick and McDavid wants out of Edmonton you make that deal happen even if you have to add real assets to the 1st overall. Then consider flipping Knies for Fox and take hamilton for free.

Beyond Raddysh, who is probably the only legit top 2-3 UFA D, there are a number of nerdy depth dmen that would dramatically improve what we have been rolling out for relatively cheap like Reilly, Blankenburg, Burns.

Could also make some sense to pay Carlson a lot on a really short term deal.

What does that actually mean though? Like, if he was available for 6.5 x 5 (again, his AFP projections is 4x5.3 and they were accurate as fuck last free agency) you'd pass?

Fwiw, here's AFP's projections on the top of the UFA market for defenders:
