The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Berube makes a hefty chunk of change the rest of his deal

#DataDriven
If they truly care about money, all Chayka needs to do is make a #DataDriven case to the board that they'll make the playoffs if they change coaches and may miss if they don't.

1 playoff game = more revenue than what they owe Craig for his final two years. So I don't buy this narrative. Chayka's gonna have to eat it if he keeps Craig.

Treliving also was owed plenty of money. So was Keefe. So was babcock.

Yeah, I don't see Eddie standing around micro managing the Leafs budget. I see him pushing back on any increase, asking Pelley to find "efficiencies" and other top level shit, sure. But "oh, that specific 4 million dollar expense is a no"....nah.

Sharks/Mammoth/Hawks? He'd be leaving because he wants to win now. No other reason.

It would be Dallas, Minnesota, Vegas, or something like that.
Yes, but I think he sees how easy the pacific is and how good him and Celebrini could be ... and its in the sun. Mamoth because of the sentimental connection to phoenix. and Utah and Arizona arent too far apart.

Dallas may be trending down and Vegas would not be what Matthews wants to do with Mitch again.

There are 5000 legit cases Chayka can make to fire berube though, and it won't be particularly difficult. Whether it's that berube sucked the entertainment value out of the leafs and made them less popular, or that keeping berube will decrease their odds of making the playoffs, it doesn't really matter. There are multiple very obvious and clear avenues where axing berube is the better financial move. Any decent "data guy" can convince a bunch of suits with a basic cost-benefit analysis to prove it.

I still find it highly unlikely that he stays, and haven't seen him say anything that proves otherwise. In fact, he already said he's going to naturally change the look of the front office, he's just giving everyone a chance to speak by meeting with them (which also helps him learn the ins and outs). Standard protocol imo.

The name Berube goes so well with his big fat stupid face. But Craig feels like a middle name or fake name. He looks like a Biff. Biff Berube. Fucking legendary dummy.

really depends on what you think of those 3 guys.

I can squint one way and believe that all 3 are kinda actually legit garbage.

Well Buium is one of the best young d in the league. His NCAA production is right there with Hutson, Sanderson, both Hughes. It’s hard to argue he’s garbage.

But the point isn’t that it’s a great deal, it’s that stars don’t usually get the equivalent of 4 1st.

Prime Karlsson was traded for a bunch of garbage and the Sens just happened to luck into a lottery pick.

Just a colossal waste of time to not fire Berube asap. Can’t wait for the Berube firing thread like a month into the season after a shit ass start.

Only a month, eh? I like your optimism.

If they do decide to bring him back, I think they’ll give him a whole lot more runway than that.

I'd feel a little better about the return if it's a Matthews that's 2-3 years younger coming off a 70 goal season. But I'd still feel shit because they'd lose that deal too.

sure but there's a reason he was drafted 12th even after putting up that production. And nerdies like net rating say he was legit terrible this year, in light usage, even compared to other rookies, so it's not exactly hard to argue. Like i said, i can squint and this turning up absolute dogshit for them.

the point that the canucks are idiots and should be ignored is probably a good one.
