The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Like, i dont think Rielly is as terrible as he was last year, but i do very much worry that all of Rielly/OEL/Tanev/McCabe could be at or approaching levels of significant deterioration which is really really bad when you are trying to win now with AM/WN

I agree but I also think that goes without saying no? Like no way Chayka thinks that’s cool to ride those 4 either.

Probably not, but its a gamble of which you pull the plug on right?

McCabe and OEL are probably the most stable with the most value.

Rielly could be cooked or could be Berube'd? And in theory what he used to be very good at is what these guys really need.

Tanev is probably a dump, but also not without value depending on how broken he actually is?

The only thing Chayka has actually said about his plan is he has to fix the D. He’s not bringing back the exact same D

They shouldn’t be subtracting any of the guys who are or have been good players.

First step, subtract the obviously bad players who have never been good and never will be. Domi, Maccelli, Joshua, Benoit, Myers. Trade them off for the best value you can get. Hopefully some of the assets back will be good players to plug in, and anything else picks and prospects.

Next, add through free agency to fill the holes created. Go hard after the big D names. Add a strategic bottom sixer or two.

Then, look to make a hockey trade. Stolarz. Carlo. Their value will only go down from here. Carlo sucks but maybe still has some name value. Stolarz will never be healthy and another year of being available for like 20 games will seal his reputation. Packaged together, maybe they can get something good, but I don’t care if it’s a late 1st or a promising prospect, just get rid of them for the best return available.

And before any of this, assassinate Berube and replace him with a coach with a brain.

Look at the damage Trerube did. They messed things up so bad that guys are questioning that it can ever be salvaged.

At least whatever this thing is that Matty may be going through should spell the end for the coach, who has to have played a major part in the damage in his eyes.

I keep thinking Stolarz and Carlo to Edmonton should be pushed. They must be desperate for a good goalie and would overlook the injury risk. Get Hyman and the best possible pick/prospect in return.

Everyone freaks about age but it gets exaggerated. Age always wins in the end but sudden cliffs are still the exception not the rule.

Obviously we want to add young studs to the blueline but we don't need to dump all the old guys either.

Like the guys we want to get rid of the most or 28/29yr olds like Carlo and Benoit.

As dumb as Edmonton’s management may be, never in a million years would they give us Hyman back for that package.

I think they would definitely give us something solid for that package tho. Problem is they don't have that many solid assets.

Walman might be good but he might stink.

That depends on how badly they want to get a goalie, and how much McDavid will be pressuring them. I don’t think they’ll find someone like Stolarz and I do think when you’re desperate you get optimistic about whether a guy can stay healthy.

If they really want a goalie, and Carlo’s name still moves the needle, I think we can take advantage and get something good out of them. I do think that injury prone and aging Hyman might be available if the price is right, but honestly I don’t care. I just want us to move these two and get maximum value in return, whatever it may be.

Then even just get the 2028 1st and any other pick/prospect you can extract. Losing these two guys is addition by subtraction from the standpoint of cap savings and injury/shit player, and we have replacements ready to go and upgrades likely on the way.

I also think that their 2028 1st could be a good one. They’re getting worse, McDavid is one foot out the door and may be traded the season prior if they’re flailing in the standings. No protection on it, or maybe just top 5 if necessary.

I wouldnt treat stolarz as a dump at all. His contract is peanuts for a good tandem goalie.

that he is either (A): A coward using a lameduck coach to give him an extra bullet or (B) Ownership won't let him fire Berube and he doesn't have the decision making power he says he does. Both are ungood.
There has been rumours that MLSE has been more interested in cost cutting and saving lately. I can see a scenario where they have convinced themselves it’s just the roster and won’t pay Berube to not coach.

And if that’s the case Chayka might be cool with a delayed bullet
