The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

There has been rumours that MLSE has been more interested in cost cutting and saving lately. I can see a scenario where they have convinced themselves it’s just the roster and won’t pay Berube to not coach.

And if that’s the case Chayka might be cool with a delayed bullet
Chayka said in his OverDrive interview that he has essentially an unlimited budget from Ed Rogers so that kinda squashes that.

I wouldnt treat stolarz as a dump at all. His contract is peanuts for a good tandem goalie.
That’s exactly it. I’m not treating him as a dump. I want to get whatever that full value is. With Woll and two other seemingly good goalies behind him, we will be fine and won’t have to count on Stolarz and have him on IR for half of every season.

When he got injured last time by making a save with his pad while standing up straight, I was done.

If these "might need a fresh start" rumours persist after Berube is fired, I'll get concerned. For now it feels like players who have always wanted to be here pulling on the only lever they can to get rid of a coach they all disliked playing for.

If its only a Berube issue then it should be very simple for Matthews to say to management "get rid of that incompetent fuck or im done"

Matthews has already told us what he wants to see. If his team is feeding this to the media, it's him putting max pressure on the organization to make it happen. He knows his contract situation.

To be fair, if Eddie Rogers took over full ownership of the NHL’s most profitable franchise only to immediately start penny-pinching (which would not be out-of-character based on how he runs his company and, at-times, the Blue Jays)—that’s not something he’d want senior Leaf management to start blabbing about in public.

He’d want them to tell everyone instead that our beloved and benevolent team owner is giving them all the money they could ever possibly need.

So, we’ll see. How they handle Brooby will be an early test of that. As well as whether or not Chayka is allowed to bring back the sports science department or start expanding our scouting & analytics. Because there’s a non-zero chance that part of what Rogers liked about Chayka is his previous experience running an NHL front office on the cheap.

There’s actually a bunch that I like on that list, including Bobby, who I always liked and would love to get back on a deal that makes sense.

I think he could’ve just avoided saying anything at all though instead of essentially saying he has a blank cheque. It wasn’t really even asked he just offered it in a question about using analytics to get an edge, iirc

I could see top level budget numbers being scrutinized more than previous years but owners don't tend to dig into the minutae.

Fair. But I’m still not going to trust either Chayka or Rogers on the front office budget until I see action instead of words.

Especially since we seemed to be actively trimming the front office budget during Treliving’s tenure. Maybe that’s just’s because Tre thought a “sports science” department was some lame-ass nerd shit. Maybe not though. We’ll see.

I think its clear that Rogers wanted to eliminate some of the superfluous positions. We saw that with Shanny, and the 6 AGMs have been talked about ad nauseum. But that doesn't mean they are cutting spending. They just think the organization was built poorly and was operating poorly. And frankly, that is true.

With their view of the Jays as an asset and their spending there, all signs point to big time spending for the other franchises.

i mean so far it's been chayka and sundin replacing treliving and shanny, so no fewer positions as of yet.

I think the Odd Couple just wants to get some "insider" info on last year's Leafs room and Character from Chief. Create some data points and get some background info.

This is a lot easier to do while Chief is employed than when he is let go.

At least that is my hope.

Right but they both bring different expertise. Its not a president of hockey ops and then a GM that is also the head of hockey ops stuff.

Which is the point. Its not about spending.
