The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

I saw a podcast with pronman on it and he babbled about that getting fired thing. Just completely goes against reality. And no pushback from anyone else on that. The Toronto Maple Leafs break people's brains like nothing else in this world. Leafs leafs leafs leafs leafs

But remember, the media fawns over and caters to the Leafs every step of the way according to the haters. Such an asinine fucking statement to hold as "fact". Like literally just watch one game and it's so obviously far from reality. National HNIC broadcast, rando American team @ Toronto and they'll be actively pumping up the American team.

I feel like the Leafs are a microcosm for everything in life these days. They make the world crazy, they make their own diehard fans crazy, and they always lose when it matters. Just pure madness.

But I'm hoping Mats has breathed new life into the franchise, as supported by what happened just 24 hours after he joined. And I feel like if the Leafs actually won the cup, the whole world would suddenly be different. It would be like shattering some awful timeline and getting everything back on track. Probably won't be this season, but it would be fitting if it's the season after and then all the '67 garbage gives way to '27 elation.

If you think of our media as Foxnews, or MAGA Leafs Media, it starts to make sense.

All they want to do is go back to the 1960s. Everything was better back then. When men were men and people won cups with broken feet.

All of our Dmen need to be Tim Horton or Carl Brewer, and non of this new fangled skill that the kids today talk about.

They make crazy takes which they forget a month after saying it, and hate numbers.

And click-bate. Tones of click-bate.

It's for Boomers and generations that want to be boomers.

Sigh.

love the gratuitous shots at the leafs, just because they're the leafs, too.

"but odds are in Toronto, you’re getting fired quickly anyway,"

like wtf.

The industry loves Treliving and are mad that we fired him. If you asked most of their opinions, they'll tell you that we should have traded Matthews, Nylander, et all and let Treliving do a rebuild rather than fire Treliving and keep the players.

Do they all get employee pricing on apps at BP or something? I don't get it. The guy has done absolutely nothing, achieved nothing, to warrant the soft touch treatment. Unless it's as simple as he's leakier than Freddie Andersen, and they love the easy access.

Yep. The majority opinion would definitely be that given a choice between Nylander/Matthews and Berube/Treliving, the latter pair is the one we should’ve kept and entrusted with conducting a scorched-earth rebuild of this team.

He's the ultimate industry nice guy. They don't see him as a nepo fail son. They see him as a guy who paid his dues in the minor leagues as a player and then an exec who earned his way to a GM role the old fashioned way and then brought success to Calgary and Toronto. He's everything we hate, but they love about the OBC.

This was of course made worse in their eyes by the choice of Chayka, who is a data nerd who didn't earn his job the right way and made his billionaire boss mad at him, which makes him a bad person.
