AFP takes the analytics and tells us what he's worth. Overpays happen. For example, AFP was well off on the Domi and Tanev deals and had both being a fair bit cheaper than they turned out to be. I think we can guess why.

Stupid shows up on it's own schedule, for it's own reasons. All you can do with sweet, sexy data is say what things should be valued at.

Not that this guy knows anything. I just have a hard time believing that most teams with the 1st overall pick in a draft with a consensus #1 wouldn’t tell the kid that barring an Eric Lindros-esque trade offer, they’ll be taking them with the first pick.

I really think Hayton is the play at C. Young prime, handles top matchups, possibly has untapped offensive upside (the nerdies are there at least). I don't know how motivated Utah is to move him, but we know they haven't re-signed him yet (RFA) so that's enough to think he's available. Utah...

Likeliest option still seems like Laviolette or his agent leaked a fake story to the media that he was about to be hired by the Leafs to leverage a better offer from somewhere else.

I just don’t believe they were prepared to hire him when all they’d done was have a chat with him on Zoom, among about 50 other people.

Yup. Who do we think plays this game better? Our media muppets, or player/coach agents?
 
Yeah the story doesn't add up.

They're clearly following a methodical process that's taken them from 55 contacts to 20 interviews and now to 5 finalists.

The idea that Laviolette would be important enough to skip the line or some kind of surprise availability that would upend the process doesn't make sense.

And obviously the line about an experienced coach needed because management felt they were inexperienced never made sense really on any level.

And of course all the rumours have been garbage so far.

Chayka has never mentioned that being important when he's spoken publicly about the job, but has spoken about the importance of the coach aligning with the organization's philosophies on the game, how to use data, etc.
