The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

That's really the main takeaway right now. The roster is good. Much better than last year, legitimately good. People are upset because it could have been so much better and we spent a shit ton of cap to make it moderately better.

The other thing it did, was kind of shattered any bit of early faith or belief any of us had built up regarding Chayka's competency. July 1 raises all sorts of questions about that now. I don't think we were emotionally ready for that to become this much of an obvious question this early into his tenure.
 
And last year's roster on paper VASTLY underperformed. Not a little, like honestly to an unreasonable degree. That was not a bottom 5 team if we had health and no Biff.

So, take that roster under normal conditions, and then consider all the adds. As I said earlier, I do expect a 4th or 5th finish, at worst. Bob will probably play the most key role in just how much of an improvement we see year over year.
 
The concerning part of acquiring Pettersson is that he could be a little bitch. That’s not to say that there aren’t/weren’t assholes on that team. I’d be all for rolling the dice but it sure does come with risk that he’s this unmotivated little cunt. I would’ve done that over blowing 20 +million on the scrubs we did.
 
I'd pass on Petterson now. Too much risk, too expensive, too much impact on 2028, and there will probably be much better trade opportunities during the course of the year for other guys who don't come with so much risk and baggage.
 
I honestly don't know with Pettersson. He looked like an elite talent, and still only 27 ... but the surface stats have been bad for 2 years now. It seems close to 50-50, it could go either way .. but that's just a lot of money and assets, and nowhere near a sure bet. I think I pass.

Pretty cool. They showed him signed but not added to the roster earlier, but there he is now. Still sinking in that we got this kid under the mostly unlikely and improbable of circumstances.

We're $2M over, without removing Domi, and MacEwen will go too, with just Andrae to be signed. Tough to imagine any more changes before camp honestly unless it's something big.

Maybe I'm wrong to think this way, but I struggle to believe that an unmotivated bitch can score 90-100 points in the NHL multiple times. I mean, this is the same logic we keep seeing get used on our star players in Toronto who go elsewhere and perform just fucking fine under pressure. Maybe the cunts are us?
 
Another comment about our current status and how devastating that Carlo trade was, even though we're only losing a 1st next year and got to keep our pick this year...

Minten. If we had just been able to keep him, he fills the 3C role adequately. If you want to get Paul and move him to the wing or have them rotate or whatever, that was still on the table. But losing Minten on his ELC, and him being part of this young core with McKenna/Knies/Cowan, for absolutely fucking nothing is just tragically killer, and the reason we have the Sissons contract on the books.
