The official NFL thread

I hate these politically-correct media-driven angry mobs. They are ridiculous and embarrassing. That doesn't make Ray Rice a victim, though. He still has to take responsibility for his actions. I am suggesting this may already have happened.

There's plenty to criticize about the media's handling of this......specifically their lashing out at the NFL or the Ravens. To say they're being too hard on Rice though, is laughable, and is imo only a stance you have (whether you realize it or not) because you're a Rice fan. Were it any other player, I highly, highly doubt we've seen you taking the stance you have.

The reason the uproar is considerable louder now than ever, is the same reason the Ravens reacted differently after seeing the video than after hearing about it........very few people expected to witness him having hit her twice, very few expected to witness him hitting her THAT hard nor that he ostensibly sucker punched her. I also suspect that they did think they'd witness Rice showing zero remorse whatsoever as she lay there unconscious.

People have been provided more information and accuracy about the details of what occurred in that elevator, and have reacted accordingly. Ravens and NFL included.

Because no matter what, context is important. This, to me, looks more like assault than domestic abuse.

Both incredibly wrong and criminal but not something that should see someone publicly tarred and feathered over and over again before eventually losing his ability to work.

Really? You shouldn't be publicly tarred and feathered for knocking out your fiancee?

We know it knocked her out though either way. Clearly it was severe from day 1.

There's a plethora of scenarios in which it could have played out that would have been exponentially less violent, or coldhearted than what we witnessed in the video though.

The severity of what took place, was unquestionably and conclusively more significant than most had envisioned.

The source said that Rice admitted to the Ravens from the start that he was guilty of striking Janay and, for the most part, accurately described what they eventually saw on the video. But the brutality of the assault when seen on the security video made a different impression.

"His description was not too much different -- except it looks more violent when you see it," a team source said.

Clearly if the brutality of the assault that was seen on the video, made a different impression......he didn't "accurately" or adequately describe what took place.

politically-correct-media-driven-mobs? Really? Really?

"Damn those uptight PC commie bastards who aren't for beating women."

There was no punishment in the first place. Slapping a guy on the wrist for laying a girl out is pretty bad. Players got suspended harsher for a lot less. That is exactly why they changed their policies even before the video came out.

The video was just an excuse to make it right.

I am aware that I am more inclined to give Rice some benefit of the doubt with regard to his overall character than I might to another player, not because I'm a "fanboy" but because I believe him to be a genuinely good person who made a horrible mistake. And also based on Janay's reaction to what happened. That is important context to keep in mind, not about the actual incident (which as others have stated, is pretty black and white), but with regard to what should happen to him going forward.

that is true but the new policy says six games for a first offence. This appears to be a first offence so why has he pretty much been banned for more than six games? Is this Goodell trying to cover up for his own incompetence?

In fairness. It was the single harshest punishment for domestic abuse every handed out in any North American pro sport (to my knowledge).....and it's not like this was remotely the first instance of domestic abuse we've seen before. They also punished him significantly harsher than the law.

.....and had they seen the video, imo. Would have thrown the book at him from the get go.

Not even remotely.

I disagree to some extent. She obviously didn't care, why should anyone else? Is this not a private matter between them? Now she is theoretically being victimized twice, once by the assault and now by the fact her husband and father of her child has no earning power.

We all knew what he did, the fact we saw it doesn't make it worse in my view. Two was too little but life is too much given the NFL policy in effect.

you are assuming Goodell didn't see the video, I am not certain that is the case

I don't believe he's being punished for future potential assaults... so he may or may not do this again but it doesn't mean that he shouldn't be punished harshly for this offense.

I also don't believe the victim's reaction should be given a lot of thought in a domestic violence case. We see women stay with and defend their abusers time and time again.

You believe this because you're a fanboy.......and you buy into him being a "good person" because when people are paying attention, he puts on a great front. When he didn't think people were watching though, we got a significantly different version of him, didn't we? Truth is, we don't have a f*cking clue as to who he really is.......but that video of who he was when he thought no one else was watching, is a f*ckload more convincing than any PR work he might do.

It's not remotely important to me......and it's definitely not important to me in the context of how he should be punished.

Poor Ray Rice. He beat his wife and is going to actually have to suffer consequences for it.

Some of you are ridiculous.

I'm also against pedophilia, regardless of whether the child is okay with it or not.

You're in the minority.

He wasn't banned for life by the NFL.
