The Trade Deadline Thread

I'm not sure that TO wants to make some big deals as much as their fans and the media have already dealt Kessel and Phaneuf 10 times over.

The more of these deals I see go down the more I shake my head at the return for Tlusty. In some years it does not pay to wait till the deadline...this year it does...I'm sorry, but Tlusty is a better player than both Brett Connolly or Curtis Glencross...both of those guys provided a far better return than Tlusty. Francis could have waited on Tlusty for a better return.

Brett Connolly isn't a fair comparison to Tlusty because he is:

* 22 years old
* Only making $850k this year (meaning Boston is taking on very little salary)
* Is an RFA after this season (so still in Boston's control)

Curtis Glencross is a more comparable to Tlusty, but Glencross is better, he has been a proven 20 goal guy many more times than Tlusty has been. I do agree with you that the return for Tlusty was a bit 'light' and Ronnie could have done a bit better than a 3rd rounder and probable 5th rounder. But if you actually use Glencross as the comparible, and agree with me that Glencross is better than Tlusty, maybe those picks we got for Tlusty were not as far off as we thought they were.

Flyers trade Braydon Colburn to Tampa for Radko Gudas (has one year left on his contract after this year and is then an RFA), a 2015 first round pick and a 2015 3rd round pick. That 2015 first round pick is conditional...if Tampa somehow manages to miss the playoffs this year AND wins the draft lottery, then that 1st round pick will be the Rangers first round pick (which was acquired last year in the St. Louis trade). Otherwise if Tampa's pick is NOT a 1st overall pick lottery winner, Philly will get Tampa's pick.

Going to need a program to keep track of all of these 1st and 2nd round picks that are flying around.

Glencross to me is a bit long in the tooth compared to Tlusty...but at the end of the day I would have thought Tlusty for a second rounder would have been a fair return...and the fact that the Jets third round pick is not in this years draft is what really is disappointing overall. Maybe the Canes can flip a couple third rounders next year for a second this year...

Brian Flynn from Buffalo to Montreal for a 2016 5th round pick (more evidence that the trade market for McClement was not very lucrative.)

Sabres trade Michal Neuvirth to the NY Islanders for Chad Johnson and a 3rd round pick. Canes put the file nail in Chad Johnson's Islander career.

Is there a worse job in hockey right now than a goalie for the Buffalo Sabres???

Is there a worse tank job in hockey right now than a GM for the Buffalo Sabres??? Neuvirth apparently won too many games (3-4-2 record, 2.28 GAA, and .938 save percentage in February); he had to go.

Enroth has been horrible since being dealt to Dallas. Dallas isn't going to make the playoffs anyway but Enroth hasn't been the solution for Dallas in a backup role. Neuvirth was playing well for Buffalo. Chad Johnson is terrible, he is going to get lit up worse than ever in Buffalo.

Pens get dman Ian Cole from the Blues for dman Robert Bortuzzo and a 7th round pick.

Huh?

Yeah, I don't get that trade either. 3rd pairing D-man for another 3rd pairing D-man and a lowest round pick. Wait a minute, wasn't Ian Cole the player that was long long time ago, like back in '07 or '08 rumored to be possibly traded to Hurricanes for Eric Staal? If that rumo was based on JR liking this dude, then I can see the logic in this trade. JR always gets his man, it may take time, but it will eventually happen. Where is Chuck Kobasew these days? And if Pitkanen ever recovers and comes back to playing professional hockey, does he go to Pens by default?

Olli Jokinen moves on to the Blues; his 3rd team in 3 weeks, and 10th career team. He has quite a jersey collection.

The Sabres have unloaded everything that resembles an NHL player. If that's not a tank job, I don't know what is.

Another head scratcher from JR. Pens trade Simon Despres to the Ducks for Ben Lovejoy.

JR always loved to bungle young defense prospects...old habits die hard. That trade was the Sportsnet pick for the worst of the day!

And since Lovejoy used to play for the Pens, it followed another of his themes...the reunion.

Wait. What?

Lovejoy is ... fine. Jay Harrison-esque. Maybe a bit more steady, but certainly not worth sacrificing somebody of any real value to bring in.

JR was on a roll in Pittsburgh..... until this trade. Not sure anyone understands this as Despres should have more value. Reeks of desperation to try and solidify bottom pairing of Pittsburgh's D for the playoffs. Only excusable if they win Cup this year..... Otherwise a bad deal.
