The Training Camp Thread

OK ... so I'm to expect that after 35 or so games as the 7th D, he's then unceremoniously dumped on Charlotte.

Why do I suspect it will all be vastly more painful than that? Like he's going to hang around Hanifin's neck like an anchor until the All Star break when somebody finally wakes up and realizes that he stinks and makes a move that should have been made this summer.

We won't be playing 7 Dmen this year unless there is some sort of unavoidable emergency. Murphy will be 6A with Tennyson or some other guy claimed off of waivers or via a trade this week holding down 6B. I don't expect Murphy to play 35 games in a row to start the season, someone else will switch in for Murphy occasionally assuming the other 5 DMen are healthy. One thing I'm pretty darn certain of is at no point will Ryan Murphy be waived this year in any effort to send him down. There are other teams who would love to get their hands on him as their own mandatory Dman for the expansion draft.

I think you are putting too bright a spin on it. While I get that we need Murphy around for the ex draft, given that he played a LOT last season when he was on the big roster and that we don't have an experienced option to take that 6th slot (no, freaking Tennyson doesn't count ... if possible he's worse than Murphy) I think you're going to see him play a lot early on this season. And I firmly think the club will deeply regret that decision.

That thickens the plot though with the lineup to start the season. You don't want to do a long far from home roadie with only 6 Dmen if you can avoid it. You have Tennyson who I expect will be added back to the roster, but would we keep McKeown up and play him on the road trip? Carrick is an option too but is a lefty. I just hate having these younger guys end up in the press box. Tennyson I couldn't care less if he watches every game from the press box. If we are going to keep McKeown up then PLAY HIM over Tennyson. If we are going to keep Carrick up MOVE HAINSEY TO THE RIGHT SIDE and play Carrick over Tennyson. same things with Fleury. NONE of these kids should be watching games from the press box. If they are with the team they need to play.

On the expansion exposure thing, could the Canes make a deadline acquisition of someone with another year on their contract and expose that person?

Sure, but other teams will be thinking the same thing so there will be a premium on a weird subset of otherwise low profile, borderline NHL quality defensemen.

The roster is now down to 29. Ryan, Brown and McGinn were sent to Charlotte pending waivers clearance.

ETA: only Ryan has to clear waivers.

Ron has been busy today. Jakub Nakladal has been signed to a 1 year contract/1 way contract worth $600k. He played 27 games for the Flames and 35 for Stockton in the AHL. He's 28, right shot and played for the Czech Republic in the World Cup.

Ron also claimed forward Martin Frk off waivers from Detroit. He's a 6'1" forward who scored 27 goals in 67 games for Grand Rapids in the AHL last season. His numbers for his first 2 seasons there were pretty meh, he has a total of 36 goals in 148 games.

So who sits while Frk plays? We already had 1 too many with PDG...now we have 2 too many forwards? Are we waiving McClement and sending him to the AHL? Bickell? Are we really sitting 2 forwards in the press box?

Sorry ... started a new topic on these moves. I'll delete it.

Fryk ... we'll have to see. He's got more time under his belt than some of our similar guys, but time will have to tell.

The move for Nakladal was more obvious. With Murphy out awhile and in need of a 6/7 guy to start with, they chose to go cheap with a guy they liked at the Worlds. Calgary fans seem to like the guy more than management did since they hadn't bothered to sign him and he came pretty cheap. Depth and nothing more, most likely. At a minimum this keeps us from having to throw McKeown to the wolves for a month.

Its not that I don't like the Frk pickup...I just don't get the roster now. Assuming PDG makes the roster, we have 14 healthy forwards now wirh Frk. Is Bickell going to sit? McClement? Nestrasil? This does hedge Aho needing AHL seasoning.

McClement is starting to fit the profile of an old, slow and somewhat one dimensional vet that is no longer needed. Frk by all accounts has a helluva shot and is pretty skilled in the offensive zone with some size at 6'1" 195. This seems like a pretty stealth move by Francis to grab him for nothing.
