TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

They certainly need an elite goalie, that goes without saying. The problem with that is they don't grow on trees and there is too much money tied up on the core 4. They also need defensive upgrades.

Dubas needs to free up money. This shit about being able to run a team with 40million tied up 4-5players is asinine.

Ville Husso maybe the play, if they can afford to sign him and without trading assets. A tandem of Campbell and Husso wouldn't be bad. Would still prefer an elite number one though. Someone that can carry a team when the defense is weak or the forwards don't show up.

First rule of business. Dont let emotions creep into your decision making process.

Losing again sucks I get that but this is a really good team. Asses the season and series as a whole, find the gaps and look to fill them.

The easy play here is to break up the core and make a move to appease the rabid fan base at the moment but its likely the wrong one. Willy is the easy target and they likely end up on the wrong end of any deal or it ends up being a lateral move.

If Gio will do a cheap 1-2 year spezza type deal than it’s hard to not think about getting some value on Muzzin in a deal. Reilly, Gio, Sandin making the left side isn’t bad and can use the deadline of upgrades are needed or available.

Brodie-Lilli-Holl as the right side is like not the end of the world but would bring in someone to battle with Holl.
Gio isnt playing for pocket change , easy 3 mil in the open market

I only had to look as far back as…tonight to fuel my crazy superhero fantasy.

I’m sure his xgfml was terrible though.

We need to get this ONCE in six years, no? You can’t constantly call him the best in the world, better than no-D McDavid, but then say we should never expect dominant superhero performances in these most important games year after year.

I love him but I’m sick of this shit. And when I’m sick of this shit I look to the best player for those extra 1-2 goals we need to take us over the top, not the third or fourth or fifth best players. Tavares put the puck in the back of the net three times in the last two games. If Matty is infinitely better, why don’t you demand even equal production??

We needed the best games of Matty’s LIFE in just ONE of the past two games. Did we get anything near that?

All the excuses from the Matthews apologists were obliterated by McDavid just hours after the Leafs hit the showers. Matthews has never had a playoff game as dominant as McDavid's last two. And that's why the Leafs are going home while the Oilers are going to the next round. What Tavares did or didn't do is as irrelevant as what Draisaitl did or didn't do. On both the Leafs and Oilers there is only one player who really matters. Only one player who absolutely positively must dominate in an elimination game. Last night, one of those players did what he gets paid big bucks to do and the other did slightly less than that. McDavid was dangerous on every shift last night. Matthews was not.

As an anti-Leafs fan I can tell you honestly that Matthews is only ever a concern to me when he "wakes up". But the fact that he needs to "wake up" in order to present a problem is the problem, isn't it? Marner is far more worrisome to me because he always shows up ready to play. But with 34 it's always wait and see which Matthews shows up. And it seems as though the bigger the situation the more likely he is to show up drowsy. He's not and has never been a big game player. You need a hat trick on a Tuesday night in February? 34 is your guy. You need a dominant performance on a Saturday night in May? Marner is your best hope.

McDavid dominanted the Taber volunteer fire department and now the takes are flying that McDavid>>>>>>Matthews

The problem with Marner is he made of marshmallows. If he isn't getting out-muscled for the puck hes getting knocked over by the wind forces of his spin-o-ramas. He needs plenty of open ice to work his magic, which is a problem in the playoffs.

Mathews on the other hand, is a big body. Seems he just figured that out this playoffs. Hes finally sticking up for himself with aggression and physical play. You add that to his already amazing talent level, you have yourself one hell of player.

McDavid does more with less than what Matthews has to work with.

Besides, you didn't just lose to Tampa. You also lost to Montreal last year and Columbus the year before that. This has nothing to do with the caliber of your opponent. This is a your team problem and specifically a Matthews problem.

Personally, I still believe Matthews is a better player than McDavid and that overall he's the best player in the league. Though that belief just makes his inability to come up big in games like last night's all the more frustrating.

(and no, one assist and a pretty XGF% doesn't count as "coming up big" to me)

Mcdavid and Matty both bring different games to the ice. You can’t really go wrong with either of them. Having the “who is the better player” argument is usually decided by what team you cheer for
