Training Camp Thread

No surprise on Tolchinsky, there really isn't room for him on the NHL roster at the moment. One more season of him hopefully dominating the OHL offensively and then we can unleash him on the AHL next season.

As for Cam, that is strike one. I don't care that the game was only after 2 days of camp and the D failed to shut down scoring opps. Barring injury, Cam and Khudobin should get 3 starts (probably playing 2.5 games each) in the pre-season to earn the job. That's just the reality. Cam just put himself a half game behind Khudobin on the scoresheet.

Funny how training camp seems to have a different meaning in Carolina. OK, assuming a lot here BUT...
I always thought it was a player's job to arrive in camp in good condition already, tweak things at most and focus on competing or showing why they have a position pencilled on the big club. Forgot that it means guys with Jagr syndrome can take a pass, because it's only Columbus, why risk getting in better shape for the start of the season. Better to take 10-20 games to get going right? Pfft.
Rant over!
;)

I would personally love for the Canes to be in the same shape as Jagr was at 42. Jagr had a questionable attitude many times in his career but he was pretty much always fit and played a ton of minutes....especially in the later stages of his career where he really focused on fitness.

That's exactly how I see it. Peters letting the goalies duel it out in preseason and perhaps the first game or two of the season. After that, all bets are off and Peters rides what works. Given the hiring of a goalie coach, the reported hunger of CWard to regain his form, and his off season conditioning, not all quality chances should have ended in the back of the net in that first game.

Meant to circle back to the "strike one" comment, which is a good one, so thanks to Slapshots for doing so.

I agree, but it's not the dismal save percentage that drew the strike call from me. It's that (and here's where fancy stats don't replace the eye) I just wasn't feeling like Cam was doing much more than "playing the position". The ownership and dominance of the crease just wasn't there, although admittedly, that's never really been his style.

Nonetheless, just too laid back for me. I expected more of an energetic Cam than I saw. He just didn't own the #1 spot he claims he's gunning to reclaim...and, heck, is practically being handed to him as his to lose.

Wasn't it Rutherford that thought the players were being pushed too hard in preseason training a few years back? If I recall he blamed, though not directly, that Pete F's training was causing players to get injured. It has seemed ever since then, the players have taken a laid back approach we have not been able to shake.

I remember Kevin Hatcher coming into camp fat and slower than usual. It probably took 10 games into the season for him to play his way into shape. I thought he might expire on the ice during camp. Hatcher's effort was the epitome of the word struggle. He pretty much needed the zamboni to follow him for all the sweat he was leaving on the ice.

Probably the hardest I've ever laughed in the PNC Arena was during that training camp. They held camp in the arena and opened up all the sessions and I went with some friends to the first one that featured a lot of the veteran players. Hatcher looked like the freaking Michelin Man out there and was visibly gassed within 10 minutes of the start of the session, which I must say was pretty light on actual skating ... mostly passing drills. Mo skated up to him ... looked him square in the face ... and just shook his head, turned around and skated away without saying anything. I laughed so hard I thought I would split a stitch.

The canes are down to two problems. They can't keep the puck out of their net and can't put the puck in the other teams net. Wait, isn't that the same problem they had last year and year before....
Oh, we like our team.
And missing Jordan is a catastrophe.

At least our #1 goalie was rock solid with 9 saves and no goals in 30:08 TOI.

It's just all those back-ups that seem to be the problem. :sarcasm

*Knock knock*

Victor Rask: "Who's there?"

"Opportunity!"

EDIT: Or should that be Lindholm?
