Updates and Rumours from around the League

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

I think they'll work something out and keep Ryan. They'll probably end up paying him just a bit less than the other two in exchange for Ryan committing for an extra year.

But since it's not going away yet...

Don't underestimate Schenn's trade value. You'd never get a lottery pick for Kaberle, but Burke has already been offered one for Schenn. If we were getting a talent like Ryan in return, I would consider it. I think Schenn is more comparable to a guy like Beauchemin than Komisarek in terms of our current blueline, so the fact that we have Komi doesn't make me think Schenn is expendable. I believe it is the other way around, in fact.

The only problem is, why would Ryan decide he wants more than a 3 year deal with the Leafs? We'd have to give him more than Kessel.

darenmillard

Confirmed raffi torres to the canucks for 1 year @ a million. Could end up being a bargain.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

I was hoping Torres would stick round and we'd invite him to camp, but reality is those spots belong to the young guys, and I knew chances are someone will pick him up before camp.

I think it's a good signing for the Canucks. When healthy, and given a limited role, Torres is a good player for that price.

SNET also reported the NHL has rejected the framework of the 2nd Kovalchuk contract submitted by the Devils. This means the Devils must go back to the drawing board and try to draft another contract again.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

The NHL is going to make Jersey do a standard deal now, nothing that would drop the average cap hit, just to make a point.

Kovy is going to have to accept less money for sure

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

I think it is OK to see the annual salary drop for a long term deal ... you'd think a 41 year old Kovalchuk would be paid less than a 31 year old Kovalchuk.

But not to the extent the first contract showed, dropping from $10M a year to $500K or something that extreme.

I think this is where the CBA can be revised to close the loophole. If they limit the year to year salary drop to a certain % (say, 20% max) it'll do.

Surprisingly, listening to the FAN this morning, they mentioned the current CBA DOES have clauses regarding how much can the annual salary drop ... they didn't go into details but I wonder if it's a case where the rule's there it just wasn't executed before.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

No, but the rules is so lax that it doesn't matter. It's something like the take the average of the first 2 years and subsequent years can't drop by more than a percent of that or something. I do remember there were 1 or 2 contracts the first year that violated that. It's just the sort of thing where you can go 5M/5M/3M/1M/1M but not 5M/5M/1M/1M/1M or something like that.

Maybe close it up by saying if any player retires before their deal is up, the cap hit doesn't simply go away, but goes away the equivalent if the contract was bought out (or a similar formula). So for these heavily front-loaded deals, sure, the player can retire, but all you end up saving is basically what you actually paid them for that season.

Search the "100% Rule" in the CBA, I think UWHabs has it right though.

NOTE: this does not mean "change in salary is limited to 50% of the prior year's salary" - it's 50 percent of the lower of the first 2 years of an SPC. This means that a team cannot sign a player to a contract averaging $4 million per year by making the 1st year $16 million, and the other 4 years $1 million (or anything else that looks like this) - because it's a violation of the 100 Percent Rule. It does mean that a team can sign a player to a contract averaging $4 million per year by structuring it as $8 million, $6 million, $4 million, $1 million, and $1 million.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

I would give Ryan Kessel money without question.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

I'm not a huge fan of Armstrong but Torres is pretty much useless. I couldn't be happier we didn't sign him.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Armstrong was obviously slightly overpriced but there's a pretty big difference between Armstrong and Torres.

Armstrong can play part-time roles on the 2nd line where Torres is more of a 3th/4th line guy. The biggest difference is what's between the ears. Torres is a textbook example of someone with all the tools but not the toolbox. As his former coach said, Torres plays his best hockey when he doesn't have to think. If given increased icetime and roles, Torres makes dumb decisions, and that's makes the former 5th overall pick a bust. Armstrong doesn't have Torres' raw skills, but is a much smarter player.

Armstrong is also a much better defensive player, and is a pretty good PKer. Torres is a defensive liability and never kills penalties.

Then of course, Torres also got into some injury problems the last few years. Look, I don't deny Torres at $1M is a better DEAL than Armstrong, but Armstrong is the better hockey player of the 2 by a significant margin. Neither is top 6, but Armstrong would be the 7th or 8th guy on a good team.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Puck Daddy's Dmitry Chesnokov learned yesterday evening that the NHL had rejected the "framework" of a deal between the New Jersey Devils and free-agent winger Ilya Kovalchuk(notes) on Tuesday.

To reiterate the NY Post's report from early this morning: There was no contract signed and submitted to the League, but rather a proposed structure for a new Kovalchuk contract.

According to a source with knowledge of the negotiation, the term of the contract was in the neighborhood of 15 years, and it was the term that appeared to be the point of contention between the sides. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly couldn't confirm the 15-year figure when we requested comment last night.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Kovalchuk is now in the position where he might accept a 5 year deal. Burke should give him a try now. I'd have no problem paying him huge money for 5 years.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

We don't have huge money to give Kovalchuk anymore. We gave it to Armstrong, Lebda, & Versteeg.

Ah, the B-pile. A familiar tale in Toronto. What is it about the best players in the league that Leaf ownership so afraid of, I wonder? It seems to be the same thing no matter who owns the team. Don't tell me they don't have the money, because if there's one team in the league that does have the cash, it's us.
