Unless the KHL is offering 100mil, I don't see why he wouldn't start looking at shorter term deals in the NHL. Put ink to paper on a 5yr, $38mil deal with the Leafs (6,8,8,8,8), $7.6mil cap-hit.

I wonder who gets dealt...no team would take Zurbus and his $10 mill over the next 3 years would they? the others have NTC's and Zajac would make little sense to me...he's young and a very good player.

I'd have interest in both of those guys.

Kypreos is suggesting the deal is 15 years, 100 million which makes no sense to me. All that trouble to reject the first contract and the cap hit is only 6.66?

It is possible, though less likely, that Lou will simply lend a player to a Euro league.

Kypreos is an idiot.

Assuming Savard's contract is borderline acceptable to the NHL, 14 year is the longest contract for Kovalchuk that the league will accept. So assuming Kovalchuk also leaves a bit of $$ on the table from his last contract, say a $100M 14 years contract, that'll be $7.1M per year, and I don't see the league accepting anything less than that.

The Devils have $3M of cap space right now, so this puts them $4M over the cap, PLUS they gotta think about they'll have to re-sign Parise next year, and he'll likely get a $3-3.5M raise.

The Devils will be looking to unload ~ $7M per year from their payroll if possible.

In theory they could still do 15 years 100 million, the last 7 years just can't be worth nothing.

Yeah it isn't so much the 17 years contract that got NHL to step in, it was the fact the last few years are at league minimum, clearly only there to lower the average cap hit.

If Kovalchuk wants to make $100M at the end of the day, and he intends to play till he's 37, 38, then the Devils are still looking at a $7-8M cap hit per year, as compared to $6M in their original $102M/17 yrs contract.

Watching the replay of the gold medal game (I know strange that it was on tsn2 a few days ago) I noticed that Langenbrunner was the captain of that team.

I like Elias skill set, but Langenbrunner is more of a leader and a better all round player. He would be an EXCELLENT role model for a guy like Bozak. If Wilson and Burke made Langs captain I hope they call Lou up right away and ask for him.

Bill Daly has confirmed that the Devils/Kovy have submitted a new contract.

Looking at Jersey's defense this year and they suck too.... Volchenkov and Talinder are looking to be the first pairing. If Kaberle signed an extension who do you think you could get for him???

This would of course not be including Langenbrunner.

I think if Lou is desperate and you offered a signed Kaberle and a cheap prospect maybe Parise could be had (he will be an RFA next year)

the number of years itself was not the problem of the contract. it was the fact that 97% of the money was going into kovy's wallet in the first 10 years of the deal, and only a measly 3% in the last 7 years. that was a clear "were cheating the cap" big red sign! they were clearly circumventing the cap. hypothetically they can still agree to a 17 year deal until a new CBA comes into effect with a max year deal. The deal simply can't circumvent the CBA. They basically can't show their cheating the cap a little.

but they're not passing on Kovy... if the cap hit on Kovy is in the 6.6 range, and they are 3.7 right now under the cap (according to capgeek) then they will be over by 2.9 mill

Langenbrunner only makes 2.8. Plus a team would probably trade 1 nhl ready player therefore negating some of that with salary coming back. Lou's best bet would be to trade Elias but 6 million for the next three years is pretty tough to swallow.

Arnot makes 4.5 for next year alone, but they just traded for him right??

Parise makes 3.125 plus he is an RFA next year bound to make double that.

Schenn + for Parise. :thumbsup(22): Jersey needs cheap no salary players. Sure other teams could offer draft picks but... hell I'd even take another salary dump to make that happen, and just eat the cost or bury it in the minors ie Salvador or something.

I know it's a pipe dream but hey Burke has pulled some fast ones lately.
