Updates and Rumours from around the League

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Thing is, what the NHL is asking for is pretty reasonable. No caps on lengths or anything. A pretty impactless way to get rid of these deals that will be gone one way or another.

And not accepting is a HUGE headache.

I don't think it would be a good move for Fehr to dig in on this issue. He should play nice and battle for something that is actually worth battling over.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Hopefully this time around Fehr won't have an utter slime like Ted Sackskin around to "help" him in the negotiations.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

The PA has to take a stand at some point...can't just roll over time and again.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Wow

The NHL has given the NHLPA an ultimatum regarding the contested front-loaded contract of not only the Devils' Ilya Kovalchuk, but Vanocuver's Roberto Luongo and Chicago's Marian Hossa, as well, The Post has learned.

A well placed source reports that the league has informed the Players' Assn. that the league will grandfather the recently submitted Kovalchuk 15-year, $100M contract, Luongo's 12-year, $64M deal that is entering its second season and Hossa's 12-year, $63.3M deal that also is entering its second season into the CBA under the following conditions:

1. That the cap hit on future multi-year contracts will not count any seasons that end with the player over 40 years of age. The cap hit would be calculated on the average of the salary up through age 40 only.

2. That the cap hit on future contracts longer than five years will be calculated under a formula granting additional weight to the five years with the highest salary.

The league has given the PA, which is being directed by Donald Fehr, until Friday at 5 pm to accept these conditions. If the PA refuses, or if negotiations fail to yeild a common ground, the league has informed the PA that:

1. It will reject the Kovalchuk contract.

2. It will move to immediately devoid the Luongo contract.

3. It will move to immediately open proceedings for a formal investigation into the Hossa contract.

The NHL owns sweeping punitive powers against teams and players judged guilty of circumvention under Article 26 of the CBA.

WTF? How can they "grandfather" a contract that hasn't even been approved? That just makes me think even more that Lamoriello and Bettman engineered this whole situation together. The league gets to dig in its heels and win concessions from the PA, and Lou gets Kovalchuk at a gift of a cap hit for the rest of his career, while also slamming the door on this ludicrous loophole behind him for all the other GM's in the league.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

The NHL now claims no ultimatum was given.

bruce_arthur
NHL, to NHLPA: "Ultimatum? C'mon, we're all friends here. Still, nice little CBA you got there. Shame if anything were to happen to it."

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

If that happens, Bettman really took it up the butt, man.

Ok, you can all circumvent on these, but from now on, be good boys. Is that the message? Total bullshit. When the last five years of Kovy's deal don't total even one of the preceding 7 or whatever, you have a complete sham of a deal. I'd rather he play in Russia than see the Devils get away with this.

And how do you "devoid" a contract?

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Bettman is giving it here not taking it. And he's not using protection.

He is trying to unilaterally force the NHLPA to give him exactly what he wants without having to go through any sort negotiations in the next CBA, and is just throwing them a bone as incentive (along with a pretty big threat).

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

If I were the players, I would want these dumb deals to go too. All they do is make it so that every year the NHL gets to keep more of the escrow money than the year before. It helps the players who want to sign these long term deals (which isn’t really to their advantage much of the time, because it forces them to commit to one team for the rest of their careers) at the expense of everybody else.

I also cannot understand why the NHL would want to turn it into some stupid power struggle with 'ultimatums'. Who cares what the general public thinks about who is more powerful? And it’s also pretty stupid if the players are trying to turn this into a bargaining chip for the next CBA, as it doesn’t actually help them. This is what’s wrong with the NHL and the NHLPA. They play head games with each other through the media, trying to see who is going to swerve, when they have no reason to even argue about the stupid issue in the first place.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

NHL and NHLPA need to work together, not against each other.

Ya, in an ideal world.

In the real world, with either Fehr or notGoodenough representing them, not so much.

Was just told that Devils punishment for Kovalchuk deal could be $1-3 million and two first round draft picks. Ouch!

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

There is a whole bunch of speculation and general internet BS floating around that Ottawa is about to make a major deal that will instantly make them contenders.

Bobby Ryan is supposedly the primary player involved.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Nothing short of a serious upgrade in net makes Ottawa a contender though, Bobby Ryan or no Bobby Ryan.
