Updates and Rumours from around the League

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

It's really simple...if...and it's a huge if, Anaheim trades Ryan, it will definitely involved a defender...a very good defender, going the other way.
We do have other high-potential defensemen, you know.

They'd probably be interested in the guy who's gonna be the best offensive defenseman of the decade though... :sarcasm

Anyways, not sure if it's been mentioned, but the Habs have re-signed Price.

Sportsnet reported it's $5.5M over 2 years. Good deal for the Habs if that's true.

I'm very happy with this deal. I would have preferred the same cap hit but for much longer, but I'll take it.

I could see Ottawa doing a deal for Thomas. That would make sense.

Ottawa-based player agent Larry Kelly is threatening legal action should the NHL revoke the long-term contract his client, Marc Savard signed with the Boston Bruins.

Speaking as a guest on the Team 1200 in Ottawa Thursday morning, Kelly said Savard’s contract was previously reviewed and approved by the NHL. Furthermore, Kelly said Savard suffered a serious concussion last season that caused him to miss half the season. He did, however, return for the playoffs, but did not play to his usual high standard.

Kelly added it is inconceivable that the league would revoke Savard’s contract after free agent season, which begins annually on July 1, has passed.

"You can imagine the lawsuit that would ensue," Kelly said.

He also added he does not anticipate the NHL revoking the deal.

Savard is one of four players whose contracts are being reviewed by the NHL, even though all four had their deals approved by the league.

Also an interesting comment on The Weasel in there, as well.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Nice to see you recognize his skills.

I think he has legitimate 50+ point upside, yeah. I've never claimed that he's crap, just that his size, as a defender is a concern. He clearly has more potential than any of your other 3 potential top 4 defenders of the future. Cowen's offensive upside is limited, which limits his overall potential, and Wiercioch taking a firm step backwards in the NCAA last season puts his upside beyond a serviceable top 4 type into question as well. Rundblad is a nice prospect, but he didn't do anything last year to distance himself from a lesser thought of Calgary prospect Tim Erixon who plays on the same team in the SEL.

Karlsson is really the only one who has exceeded expectations since they were drafted, and he's clearly the prize of the bunch.

2008-09 U. of Denver NCAA 36 12 23 35
2009-10 U. of Denver NCAA 39 6 21 27

1 yr older, same level of competition, no injuries but yet a fairly significant drop in production. .97ppg is impressive for a freshman defender, .69 for a sophomore, not so much.

Re: Trade Updates and Rumours from around the League

Why? It would improve the Sens and prevent any Savard to Toronto deal.

Yeah, true, it would improve the Sens for now, but I've been consistent in saying that I feel it's a bad contract and the 35+ aspect of the deal would be part that'd scare me off.

I'm not actually holding my breath for a Savard to Toronto deal so that really has nothing to do with it for me.
