Not to mention the rumored possibility of a cap penalty for the whole Kovalchuk fiasco.

depends on where he'd be willing to waive to go really...if he's willing to waive to go to 10 different teams, Lou might get something in return...if he picks 1-2 of the teams interested in him, it might be the Gagne deal all over again.

Lou is going to bury payroll in the AHL once again, I don't see another way out of it for him.

He probably won't be able to trade Rolston and he can't send him down because it's a 35+ deal. The only option is Zubrus really to send to the A.

He can send Zubrus down, but that's still not enough space.

hell, even if he sends Zubrus and his THREE YEAR contract (and zubrus and lou have a LONG relationship), AND dumps langenbrunner, they're still barely squeezing under the cap, and probably have to go with a 22 man roster.

It's not like it's a group that lacks leadership overall though, and it's the last year of Lang's contract, so much easier to move than Elias (or Rolston, who is about impossible right now)

His options are limited because of the dollar value involved here. It's really only one of Elias, Rolston, or Arnott.....

or burying Zubrus (the easy choice) + one of Langenbrunner or Clarkson.

That Arnott trade is coming back to bite him in the ass.

Lou obviously has permission from ownership to bury payroll as they were the ones pushing to sign Kovalchuk.

Oh, and the cherry on top is that Parise is an RFA after this year.

Lou has no soul -- which is one of the reasons he's so successful.

He changes coaches like he changes underwear. He will even fire coaches just before the playoffs when they're near the top of the conference. He will send established NHL vets to the minors. And he will trade his captain if he needs to.

but there's noone to bury.

Rolston's on a 35+ deal.

Elias has a NMC.

they just signed Arnott/Volch/Tallinder.

Zubrus is the only one they can bury, and that's not enough to get them under.

They could bury Salvador too, but they'd just have to replace him on the blueline somehow. It'd be tight.

Yeah, I thought of mentioning Salvador, but really, they need him a lot more than they need some of their wingers now that they've added Kovalchuk to their forward compliment.

Jersey only has 7 defenders signed

Yeah, minimum salaries would work. If they try and get any of their better prospects in there, they aren't cheap enough, that's all. I mean, most of the guys an NHL team would want to call up are around $850,000+.

if a Toronto GM does this, people will criticize him to no end, and claim that no UFA will ever sign with the team etc. etc.

Yes Lou is successful, but I know I wouldn't sign with his team if I were a player. He could get me a ring, or could end my career. I'll take my chances elsewhere thanks.

I guess Zurbus and Salvador would do it, but damn, sticking two guys in their early 30s, who are still effective players, and who you signed to those deals yourself, down in the minors for multiple years is one helluva dick move.

they have to move Elias. Parise is up for a new deal next year.

They can't afford to keep Elias beyond this year no matter who they send down.
