World Juniors Thread

If the Canes end up picking anywhere from 6th-9th Patrik Laine might be available at those picks. Although I suspect his stock might be rising...there are not a lot of 6'4" finishers available in drafts. Puljujarvi I've seen projected anywhere from 2nd to 4th.

Nedeljkovic with the shutout in a Team USA 7-0 quarterfinal win over the Czech Republic. 1.15 GAA and a .954 Sv% in 5 games so far....

5 games 4 goals 8 Assists +7 for Aho so far. I have no idea how this kid will turn out when it comes time for him to try his hand at a North American pro career but for this 2 week stretch playing with 2 of the absolute elite 17 year olds in the world (both Puljujarvi and Laine are projected top 10 overall picks), he has obviously looked fantastic. Puljujarvi is on the same team as Aho in the Finnish pro league and Aho has by far outperformed him this year despite being just 1 year older.

That is another thing to note as Finland continues this incredible offensive surge through the 2016 WJC. Their top line that is creating all of this buzz and scoring half of their goals consists of 2 17 year olds and and 18 year old. Aho is the 'vet' of that line.

Fleury and McKeown were held to 1 Fleury assist in the 5 games Canada played. McKeown was +4, Fleury -1

From my observation Aho's game really is about fast, shifty, crafty plays. He's definitely got high high hockey IQ and uses his wheels, the corners and angles to create space for himself and his teammates. Definitely works well paired with those two towering wingers of course. I can see Aho and Linholm clicking on a line... just need to figure out a center (or winger ir Elias plays center.. that could be one of the two towers)

On and, happily happily eating crow. RF's stock is looking good right now.

One more thing about Aho, he's always been described as a winger, left winger, but correct me if I am wrong, he played some center during the WJC on that line?

He's a left shot, but described as a natural right wing, which is the position he normally plays.

However Team Finland has him playing center between Puljujarvi and Laine for this tournament.

The way people are talking, it definitely doesn't sound like he'll make it that far.

Great to see the production coming from Aho and hopefully that can translate to the NHL level with the Canes. That said, enough of the Fins......what about Team USA? They have looked pretty good so far and Austin Matthews is very much proving to be the real deal as he leads the tourney with 7 goals in 5 games. Big game with Russia coming up Monday afternoon. Would be great to see a finals match up with Finland against USA.

Double crap on that one.....Wonder how much motivation Ron Wilson provided before the game when he said he didn't know anyone on the Russian team? Isn't it his JOB to know the other team. I always thought that guy was a tool bag....and he pretty much confirmed it with statements like that. Good luck getting back to NHL with comments like that.

Good Old Ronnie Wilson always had a way with words...not! He does seem like a tool bag and sticks his nose into things where they don't belong. That U.S. team is filled with great players that will play for many years in the NHL, USA Hockey should be proud of their development program, it has improved in spades!

Aho with a goal and an an assist in the final as Finland takes the gold in OT.
Safe to say his stock is on the rise.

US takes the Bronze, beating Sweden 8-3. Nedeljkovic finished with a 1.66 GAA and .943 save % in 6 games.

Next year's tournament is in Toronto and Montreal. Group A is Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic, Denmark and Latvia. Group B is Canada, Russia, US, Slovakia and Switzerland.

Ron Wilson ... something broke inside the guy at the 98 Nagano Olympics when the US team went batcrap crazy on him. Ever since then he's been twice as hateful and bitter as he's been effective.

Wasn't that a team that Kane was on and part of another controversy, yet again? Wasn't that when they trashed the hotel room?

Right. That team was captained by Chris Chelios. It was the first Olympic tournament with NHL players. The US finished an underwhelming 6th. IIRC, the players dug into their own pockets to repair the damage without admitting guilt.

lol. sign you are getting old. don't you remember Kane was there all ten years of him? causing probs?? ;)
Right. Chelios. Hull. Remember that one. Remember Chelios being real sour bout that one, in his very chagrin way. Don't get me wrong, Chelly is legendary for me. Would have loved to see him play all those years for us...
