Around the League 2017-2018 Edition

They gave away Hoffman because he was a major locker room problem for them. Did anyone really think a team would give up anything for him at this point?

They essentially paid the Sharks to take him. Took a bad contract and gave up a better pick. He had no value.

A competent organization would have got out in front of this mess before the rest of the world knew and either dealt Hoffman or Karlsson at the deadline last year.

There is no way Ottawa didn't have a window into this before anyone else, and if they didn't they are just as dumb for not knowing their own room.

I mean Ottawa bungles everything, so sure. But its not like they haven't been shopping Hoffman forever. He is a pretty good player on a good deal, and they couldn't move him and now its clear why. I suspect this was know around the league.

No one was giving value for that guy now. Most teams probably wouldn't even take him.

Pierre Dorion on this deal:

"Today's trade showcases our determination to strengthen the future of the team by improving chemistry, leadership and character in the locker room and on the ice."

So yeah...does anyone else read that as Dorion taking Erik Karlsson's side in a very public way, and taking a big dump on Hoffman?

What I take both from Dorion's comments and this deal is that at this point, Ottawa is still harbouring a desperate hope that Erik Karlsson will re-sign with them.

Otherwise, why rush in to such a bad deal? Because unless the prospect defenseman Ottawa acquired from San Jose turns into something, this is just a brutal trade.

Wasn't the rumour that a Karlsson trade to Vegas was nixed at the deadline, Vegas refused to include Cody Glass in a potential deal?

I think an Erik Karlsson trade is still very much a possibility.

Otoh... I feel worse about a potential Pacioretty deal. I assumed he and Hoffman had similar value. I guess this recent controversy really dinged Hoffman's value.

I don't think you really have to worry about that at all.

This is clearly a case where the controversy & Ottawa's desperation to move him ASAP in order to take their shot at signing Karlsson tanked Hoffman's value.

Pacioretty, as a big 35-goal/65-point winger on an expiring and very affordable deal should be a very highly sought-after commodity.

...as long as Bergevin doesn't screw it up, of course.

Yeah... I guess the only thing to worry about is how bad Bergevin will screw it up... more than the market.

All of a sudden I feel a little better about the Galchenyuk trade.

I mean you shouldn't the deals are both terrible but entirely different situations.

Ottawa had to take whatever they could get for a guy they had to trade.

Montreal could have just kept Galchenyuk, or traded him for something, better

I dont think the two are tied together.

If he bungles the Max deal it's because he's a moron, little or nothing to do with Hoffman.

Same deal with Carolina and Skinner

I definitely don't love the Galchenyuk trade... but with the contract and cap savings I will be "okay" with it as long as we're a cap team.

he really should keep Patches, imo. guy is underrated. he won't get proper value.

The problem is what does Max want as a FA? I'm not really comfortable giving him like a 7x7 type of deal, and I can't see him settle for much less than that on the open market. Given that, and given how wing-heavy we are, I'd be totally fine with dealing him if we get good value back.

Berg has to be smart there.

If he approaches the proper analytics minded GM he should be able to pry out a good young C prospect I think.
