No it wasn't about that. It was about settling for lesser lights over the superstar when they have a chance to get one.
Instead of Kovalchuk, we spend nearly 8 million on Versteeg, Armstrong and Lebda...the latter two being guys we have no business spending 4.5 million on in free agency. Your system just has to have a guy or two who can do those jobs for way less money. Instead of Forsberg on a short-term deal, we sign Allison and Khavanov. Instead of getting Chris Pronger, we decide to keep Alex Steen. It really has nothing to do with the cap at all. This is a problem we've had long before the salary cap came around.
Phil Kessel and Phaneuf are excellent players. I am very happy to have them. Those were significant moves because the last time we did something like that was 1994. It's good to see the Leafs going after young star players. They were good trades. But I'm talking about the elite of the elite. Kovalchuk. Pronger. Jagr. Any of these guys could have worn Leaf jerseys, but we never seem to end up with that type of player somehow.
