OT: American Politics

Perhaps you should read this:

http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/...ndterritories/iran/nuclear_program/index.html

Of course if you choose to believe Khamenei then there is really no point in discussing. Considering the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan and the West's keen interest in the area, thousands of centrifuges not being used for the acquisition of nuclear weaponry is hard to believe. If anything, Iran would want them to ensure sovereignty.

Actually, it's well-known that Iran has centrifuges and is attempting to create nuclear weaponry. UN investigators are now banned from regions in Iran because they found out about it.

I don't believe for one second that this is not the case. They claim it is for power...what else are they going to say.

Didn't a US/Israel coventure end up with a virus destroying a huge number of these centrifuges? I am sure I saw that on TV somewhere.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

You guys really need to stop the mudslinging. It's embarrassing.

zeke, a dumb statement on two fronts.

1. you're one of the parrots who have gone on and on and on and on about a "lack of civility" in the GOP and about how they are nothing but vicious ideological attack dogs foaming at the mouth and making personal attacks left and right. yet here, when he makes positive comments about someone from the other side, he's "ridiculous". he's a cruel, vicious, hate-filled troglodyte when he makes attacks, he's "ridiculous" when he's conciliatory.

2. if you choose to look at the strategy behind what he said, if you were a little more politically sophisticated you could probably figure out what he was doing here. bubba has clearly still "got it". even his most bitter political critics, people like me, have always had nothing but immense respect for his political skills. it's clear he still has a lot of cachet with the american public. but, as romney points out, the constitution prevents him from running so he's not a threat. his days as an elected politician are over. so it doesnt hurt romney to praise him and pump his tires, but it DOES allow people to see a clear contrast between a "successful" president like bubba, and what many of us would argue is a failed president like hopeychange. when voters see that difference and are given the chance to vote this time around, maybe they choose not to park their vote with a guy who clearly doesn't rank among the roster of "successful" presidents.

Clinton ripped him and his campaign to shreds, and the only thing he has to say is "great speech".

Just my opinion, but I think that's ridiculous.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

it would be hypocritical if i had a history on here of roundly attacking public sector unions and accusing them of being the root of all evil. the fact is that i havent done that. i have absolutely avoided doing that because i understand the value that public sector unions have. i have argued before about how there is a role for unions, even in a market system. they are one side of the "market" and it is perfectly consistent with a market when a group of workers sits down with a group of employers to freely and fairly and within legal boundaries, agree on a compensation package.

as to your second statement, i have argued that the ultimate right of individuals to self-determination, to the point where that always trumps all other rights and responsibilities, is wrong, and narcissistic, socially corrosive, and the root of many of our society's problems.

yes, you are, but then now you don't get to dismiss the romney campaign as nothing but a pack of raging, hate-filled attack dogs who never have anything positive to say. because when they do, you think they're ridiculous.

so, what we've learned here is that you will see romney and anyone from the GOP as stupid, ridiculous and wrong when they are doing things you don't like, or doing things you say they should have been doing all along.

If you don't think Iran is a problem in that region as well as Pakistan then there really is no point discussing it. It will only turn into mudslinging.

As far as Canada's severing ties, I believe it is predominantly due to Iran's march to nuclear weaponry.

I would say it has more to do with John Baird bl*wing the whole Likud cabinet.

Whatever makes you feel better, I guess.

That is just plain stupid politicking, from where I sit.

One of my favourite moments in Simpson history

meh, I'd be surprised if any of the targets hadn't expressly espoused affiliation with terrorist organizations threatening U.S. citizens.

But of course, you'll never know because it is all done in total secrecy (aside from them boasting about their murders when they feel it helps them politically) without any due process - not even a whiff of it. They brand you a "militant" and you and anyone around you, without any accusation beyond that (which, again, amounts to being male 18-35 in these areas), let alone an opportunity to defend yourself in a court of law, can be summarily executed. If a Republican was doing this, Dems would be screaming until they're blue in the face. In fact, they did just that over illegal wiretapping - tiddly winks next to this darkness. It's truly astounding listening to people defend these most egregious violations of every last principle of democracy, peace, human rights and civility.
