[QUOTETaliban leader, police link Iran to attacks in Afghanistan

By Bill RoggioFebruary 2, 2011

According to both the Afghan police and a recently captured Taliban commander, Iran is training and supporting the operations of the Taliban in southwestern Afghanistan.

A Taliban commander named Mullah Gul Ahmad, who led a group of 30 fighters and was captured recently by police in Nimroz province, said he was recruited in the eastern Iranian town of Zahedan, a known hub for Iranian Qods Force's operations in Afghanistan.

"I studied at a religious school in Iran where someone named Khaled provoked me to perform jihad against Americans," Ahmad said in a confession obtained by the Afghan interior ministry and aired on Afghan television two days ago. Ahmad claimed that he and his group fought in Helmand province after receiving training in Iran.

Sayed Mohammad Faqir Askar, a police chief in Farah province, said other Taliban fighters captured in the province have also admitted to training in Iran and being based in Iran.

"Some individuals who have been detained by our security forces have confessed that they have terrorist centers in border regions of Iran and they are trained in how to use weapons and lay mines," he told Tolo TV. "In fact, these terrorists are trained in Baluchistan area of Iran."

Another anonymous Afghan official said that both Iran and Pakistan are sponsoring terrorist groups in Farah.

You do know that Canadians haven't been in Afghanistan for almost a year and a half, right? And Canadians were never in Helmand Province. Moron.

What are you talking about? Iran is a peaceful god-fearing nation that would never attempt to support terrorism or proliferate nuclear arms.

THIS is why we cut ties to iran. they are ordering fresh terror attacks against western targets. the jcys of the world want to cuddle up to them and apologize for them, or make partisan hay out of us trying to isolate them by labeling any steps to do that as "angry" or "hate-filled", or "war-mongering". but its the right thing to do.

It's obvious that a country as stable as Iran should be allowed to proceed with nuclear acquisition and testing. It would be good for the region.

While I appreciate your sarcasm, the US has little credibility on nuclear proliferation given they turn a blind eye to Israel having nuclear weapons. Whether or not that country would use them first (and I think they would), at the end of the day, we all know the reason we had no hot war during the Cold War was that both sides knew the other would destroy them in a counterattack.

As long as just one country has nuclear weapons in the region, then the other feels threatened. India and Pakistan don't go to war with each other because each have weapnos.

Perhaps if both Israel and Iran had nuclear weapons, tensions would be lowered?

I just hate the fact that the US's blank cheque to Israel might give Israel more balls for a first strike.

This race is going to be won in basically two states, Ohio and Florida. Some would argue four with Michigan and Pennsylvania there but they are traditionally blue.

Romney wins Ohio and Florida and he wins the presidency. I don't see how he can win it without those two states. There would have to be some major upsets to do so.

Except they weren't. The area where Canada was fighting is inhabited predominantly by Pashtuns. Iran has ties with Uzbek and Tajik fighters, which are prevalent in other parts of the country.

Not from what I have read. Iran trains Afghans who then train other Afghans. Plus, Iran supplies them with weapons that are transported throughout the country.

oh, i get it. iran is only helping the taliban in HELMAND, not in KANDAHAR. i see. it's totally obvious. just like it was obvious when you said there was nothing to suggest iran was helping hamas, hezbollah, assad, or north korea.

i think virginia and maybe even NC are going to be extremely close too. and if romney is up and winning michigan and wisconsin, thats a bad bad sign for hopeychange on election night.
