OT: American Politics

I'm waiting for Romney to eventually say "I kind of like Obama to be honest. I don't know how different I would run the country. I'd probably try to maintain the status quo. It has been very kind to me and my lovely family"

He already said that about Bill Clinton.

Romney isn't that extreme, it's just that he's such a political whore and he needs to appease all the crazies in the party.

....Rush Limbaugh disagreed, “if Obama wins, it’s the end of the Republican Party.”

“There’s going to be a third party that’s going to be orientated towards conservatism — or Rand Paul thinks libertarianism,” he continued. “If Obama wins, the Republican Party will try to maneuver things so conservatives get blamed. The only problem is right now, Romney is not running a conservative campaign.”

“But they’re going to set it up, ‘Well, the right sat home, the right made Romney be other than he is.’ They’ll try to deflect the blame, but they got who they want,” he said of the Republican Party’s selection of Mitt Romney for president......

Given that the economy is bad, Laura Ingraham argued Romney should be shoo-in and blamed the Republican Party’s leadership for that not being the case.

“If you can’t beat Barack Obama with this record, then shut down the party,” Ingraham said. “Shut it down, start new, with new people because this is a give-me election, or at least it should be. And the millions of dollars — I keep going back to the million and millions and millions of dollars that are paid to these political consultants election after election. We hire people who have lost previous campaigns, that run campaigns that have failed, who have message campaigns where the message fell flat — and they keep getting rehired. I don’t understand that. I don’t know why those are the people you hire.”

Romney is more of a Tory type (under the Canadian model) than a true conservative. He's just playing to the extremist religious base of the GOP in order to get elected.

Which ironically, has made him unelectable in terms of alienating every other important demographic (particularly minorities, women, and centrists).

Never underestimate how stupid Americans are.

He could get elected.

When in doubt, think of the possibility that Sarah Palin COULD have been President.

Ohio poll question.

They did a poll during the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing and only 71% of Americans thought that the accomplishment was significant, or worth the program costs.

The most amazing achievement in the history of mankind, whose establishment enabled the procurement of hundreds of technological and medical advancements throughout the process (and increased knowledge of space), and almost one-third of respondents thought it wasn't necessary or cost too much...

To those GOPs already throwing Romney under the bus, he still gives them a shot, however slim. Can you imagine Santorum or Newt becoming the President?

There seems to be some confusion about what provisions of Obamacare Mitt Romney says he wants to keep, but some of that confusion seems to belong to Romney himself. On Meet The Press yesterday, Romney stated that there are "a number of things" in the President's health care reform bill that he plans to include in his own, once he gets the chance to replace it. Among the provisions that Romney said he supports is coverage for those who have pre-existing conditions, but then a spokesman later clarified that stance by saying that Romney would not pass a federal law that required insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions. He only meant that a free, competitive marketplace would provide for it.

When it was pointed out that we already have a free, competitive marketplace that doesn't provide those guarantees, the campaign issued another clarification, saying that he "will ensure that discrimination against individuals with pre-existing conditions who maintain continuous coverage is prohibited." We added the emphasis there, because the key distinction is that this would only apply to people who already have health insurance. If someone switches plans (like in the case of people who change jobs), the new plan must continue to cover them.

I posted before about Romney saying he'd keep some things about Obamacare but looks like he's backtracked a little from those comments.

On national TV on Sunday morning, with millions of people watching, Mitt Romney told David Gregory that there were parts of Obamacare he actually liked. In fact, he said, one of the goals of his health care plan "is to make sure that those with preexisting conditions can get coverage." A few hours later, with approximately zero people listening, a spokesman quietly "clarified" what he meant:

In reference to how Romney would deal with those with preexisting conditions and young adults who want to remain on their parents’ plans, a Romney aide responded that there had been no change in Romney's position and that "in a competitive environment, the marketplace will make available plans that include coverage for what there is demand for. He was not proposing a federal mandate to require insurance plans to offer those particular features."

Nicki Minaj gets death threats for a rap the endorses Romney, which is enough of a story in and of itself. Then Obama let's her off the hook saying it's just her "characters" and she gives Prez a shout out for understanding.

Apparently Obama has sealed up the crack headed moron vote. The fact that he has time for this nonsense just makes him look foolish. Meanwhile the bad economic news just keeps rolling.

It'll be a month tomorrow since we found out Paul Ryan was the vice presidential nominee and we already know his favourite bands and exactly what they think of him. What's the difference?
