OT: American Politics

So the government's ready to sell off it's 53% share of AIG that they took on in their "bailout", and they expect to make a 20% profit.

The George Bush sanctioned bailout that Obama will take credit for?

Remember, anything bad is Bush, anything good is Obama.

The GOP sewed the seeds of their troubles with the Faustian bargain with the evangelical zealots. They, more than anyone (due to their approach to thinking about, well, anything) are the source of no-compromise gridlock. There is no room for negotiation with this crowd. They need to be marginalized politically until some sense of maturity and reason prevails.

That said, Romney can still pull this out of the fire. The point is that this should have been a cake walk given the state of the economy and citizens united ruling.

Exactly. Having a strong, cohesive, capable party and leader would have meant Obama's utter destruction. The GOP has none of that however. They will simply get the not Obama votes.

Look at the vertical on this guy.

That's what happens when your shop is in a red county.

Yes, things are that polarized in many parts of the country. The Dems do the same thing in California.

ya know, you repeating it matter of factly doesn't make it sound any better.

was that one of the Bush ones? I gotta be honest, i can't remember which was which. if so, good for bush. I guess it was mostly the banks that he chucked money to without getting anything back.

I'm not so sure, I think anyone would have had trouble. A *big* part of the problem is the evangelic base and Tea Baggers. They didn't like Romney, and they wouldn't have like anyone, no matter how strong, who they viewed as too moderate on their key issues. He had no choice but to parrot some of their real extreme social stuff, and that's what might freak out a lot of folks in the middle. And given their inflexible, extreme positions on education, women health, and gays it's hard to see where there's room an acceptable dialogue or accommodation. There's no oxygen for bargaining, none. It's just as stupid as closing and embassy and severing diplomatic relations.

And this quacky, reflexive faith-based approach any issue is spilling over into other stuff. The fact they even played footsie with the gold standard in their policy platform is just... crazy. Just crazy. WTF.

History has repeatedly taught us that dealing with zealots leaves little to no room for compromise. It's too bad more people don't learn from history.

George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, might have the most punchable face in the all of modern politics. He just oozes flabby, Etonian smarm.

Also, whatever happened to separation of church and state? Poof!

Yeah, it's disturbing. But, we have our own hornets nest abuzzing too. One of your Greekling compatriots is getting super-Orthodoxy about the content of public education. Sorry, buddy. Send yer kids to private school.

What makes you think they aren't in private school? 1 is out of school, 1 is a junior in college and the other is 5.

Oops. Wires were crossed, sorry. I was referring to some Greek guy in Hamilton who is causing trouble. We have our own Church/State crapola.
