Updates and Rumours from around the League

Hmmm. Thinking about it, and not sure if spending another $4+ million on a defender with Phaneuf, Gunn, Gardiner, Rielly, Franson is the best use of cap.

with gardiner's play these playoffs, I'd have to agree.

Gardiner is who we thought he was coming into the year. and that's a kid who's already a good #2...at least.

next year I'm more than happy going with:

Gardiner - Phaneuf
Gunnar - Franson
Rielly - whoever

I don't know if it makes sense to add another big salary on the bluline.

Gunn and Franson are both RFA's this offseason and will get significant raises. Phaneuf needs to be extended soon as well. They still have Liles and his salary.

You don't want 4 or 5 mill on the bottom pair again, which is what will happen once Gardiner and/or Rielly stick full time.

You guys were the loudest supporters of locking up big money in Bouwmeester though, no?

Yup. But he's better than any of the Nucks guys we're talking about. He's a difference maker. But they'd eventually have to move a Gunn or Franson. There would be way too much salary tied up on the blueline.

So spend the money but only if he's a stud. Yeah, fair enough.

I still don't see the big center out there. I know you guys aren't Burke fans but I think I'd have more faith in him to make a big, ballsy move to bring in that guy than Nonis. Maybe he'll surprise me though.

I hope Nonis has more of an appreciation for puck-moving D than Carlyle does and he doesn’t end up trading either of Gardiner / Rielly thinking that “the puck-moving quota is filled”.

I think this D-corps could potentially give the Leafs an advantage no other teams in the league can match.

The difference in the series so far has been on defense and in net. My focus wouldn't be on upgrading the forward core.

Guys like Fraser, O'Byrne, and Liles have been killing us. Reimer hasn't been all that great either.

I don't think there's been much difference at all between the two teams this series, other than game 1, which might be viewed as a throwaway game in retrospect.

and I have a hard time singling out Liles in game 1, when the whole team was awful.

Pretty much. Mind you, Reims first playoff test so i'll give him a bit of a pass(next year i'll expect more consistency). I would like us to add a solid backup(like Biron in NY).. The rest is spot on as well. If those guys didn't **** up so much we'd be leading in this series.

I guess I figure with the way Gardiner has stepped up this playoffs and Rielly coming eventually, we have upgrades coming on D already.

Sure, but even with those guys they only have 5 quality NHL dmen, two of which are essentially rookies.

They don't need to bring in a long term solution. But that doesn't mean they don't need help.

don't know if we have to worry too much about who our #6 dman is.

and I don't know how the word "only" applies to having 5 dmen as talented as those 5.
