I remember once I was at a bar and got into it with some guy that was hitting on my then girlfriend, I told him that I was going to 'fvcking kill him' and swore my face off. He ended up calling the cops at they came to my house the next day. Cop asked me a few questions, laughed, and said that the matter is closed.

And he's 100 percent right: the utter severity and depravity of things like slavery does tend to be glossed over or made more palatable to the wider consciousness, intentionally or not.

Twelve Years a Slave is a great film precisely because it shows things in a brutal, real, and honest fashion. It pulls no punches and that's what makes for such a powerful viewing experience.

Well no. Now that we know he smokes crack while in one of his drunken stupors, him being in a video in a drunken stupor isn't shocking.

Doesn't mean it's OK behaviour for the mayor of a major city though.

You should re-direct your misplaced anger and holier-than-thou attitude at the corrects source: the educational institutions and communities of people that allow that type of previous ignorance to fester.

I have no problem with people admitting past faults and being contrite in their transparency over it.
