OT: American Politics

Yes, he's a victim of his education at Ivy League Colombia University.

and Gone with the Wind.

christ.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

By the way - I'm not sure what the issue is with this second video.

For real?

He's clearly just drunk and ranting...and in his home.

He's not "just drunk"..and apparently, that's not his home he's in.

I remember once I was at a bar and got into it with some guy that was hitting on my then girlfriend, I told him that I was going to 'fvcking kill him' and swore my face off. He ended up calling the cops at they came to my house the next day. Cop asked me a few questions, laughed, and said that the matter is closed.

I doubt I would have voted for you as mayor during that period of your life either.

It's rhetorical nonsense.

Or tweeking out, take your pick.

He's a victim of being taught that a virulently racist and oppressive ideology was the norm, or morally acceptable, absolutely.

How are you not getting this?

Like I said earlier, which you very conveniently ignored, do you also blame North Koreans, or other cult members for not knowing what is the norm?

seriously, what the **** are you talking about?

this guy was born and raised in New York, New York, and has an Ivy League education.

what the ****?

How do you not understand that his piece was an obvious scathing critique on the passive acceptance of injustice in our culture? How did you not get that?

It was blatantly transparent.

Dude, really? He's the mayor.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

In corks defense it isnt shocking or anything ... sad that it is expected. Now imagine if it was Harper.

See the outrage now?

And he's 100 percent right: the utter severity and depravity of things like slavery does tend to be glossed over or made more palatable to the wider consciousness, intentionally or not.

Twelve Years a Slave is a great film precisely because it shows things in a brutal, real, and honest fashion. It pulls no punches and that's what makes for such a powerful viewing experience.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

100% he's the mayor, I get that.

But I thought he was in his own home and just ranting.

Imagine if we had hidden cameras capturing the conversations of all politicians. There would be embarrassing 'bombshell' videos every day.

Admittedly, I have no experience with people who are on crack, so if I'm missing something there...

Well no. Now that we know he smokes crack while in one of his drunken stupors, him being in a video in a drunken stupor isn't shocking.

Doesn't mean it's OK behaviour for the mayor of a major city though.

Oh no, Ford's going to use the Joe Thornton defence?

scathing?

a shrug of his shoulders saying "whoopise, I'm a highly paid professional opinion writer with an ivy league education and a history of taking controversial stances on race using my widely read bully pulpit, but this new hollywood movie just taught me that slavery was acutally......bad. who woulda thunk it? I had no idea!"

stop being an idiot.

Don't be obtuse.

You've got more money and privilege due to your upbringing than pretty much every poster on this forum. You should know from experience more than anyone how closeted that bubble can be.

Dude makes a column dripping with contrition and shame at how history is white-washed and you call him out on his honesty for admitting his previous world view's shortcomings? For shame on your part.

You should re-direct your misplaced anger and holier-than-thou attitude at the corrects source: the educational institutions and communities of people that allow that type of previous ignorance to fester.

I have no problem with people admitting past faults and being contrite in their transparency over it.

yeah, I guess you're just an idiot. who knew?

It's like a major public figure just admitting that Christmas Vacation taught him that Santa Clause doesn't actually exist.

except in this case, "santa clause" is one of the most horrific episodes in history and one of the most relevant and important sociological issues in american history.

Heh. Hit a nerve there I see.

Must be hard to be around perfect angelic zeke, who clearly sees the world perfectly, and has never had to change his amazing worldview or been wrong about anything.

Would hate to make a mistake around you.
