Let's be clear - Chara leaving Ottawa was the most significant departure in franchise history. Truly a blunder.

But there is context to remember. Chara had just spent the past 2 weeks being abused by the speedy Buffalo Sabres in the playoffs. He was literally being burned wide on a nightly basis. Redden, on the other hand, was the teams best defenseman during the same stretch and was part of the reason the whole league was going apeshit over "mobile defensemen".
 
Until Heatley went off and put his peep where he shouldn't, the Heatley trade worked out fine.

He was a multiple 50 goal scorer.
 
Nah. Heatley was always a one dimensional floater. He was great at that one dimension, but Hossa is one of the best two way players in the game. Terrible trade.

Muckler just never realized what he had. And he had two of the best players in hockey.

Hossa has had a better career overall, but for the years immediately following the trade Heatley was the more impactful player.

Cork, do you not think that Muckler ass-****ing Hossa the way he did contributed to his countryman Chara's decision to leave the Senators at the first possible opportunity? Hossa in good faith negotiated a contract extension for a reasonable price, only to get shipped off to one of the worst franchises/markets in the league before the ink on his new contract was even dry.
 
That whole Hossa deal stunk - but I don't think that's why Chara walked. Chara wanted a place to be a captain and he wanted money. Boston provided both.

You don't know how quotes work, do you?

Hossa had the better career (Heatley has really dipped off the map) but for the immediate years following the trade Heatley was an offensive force. You can argue that Hossa was better all you want, but to call it a "terrible trade" is ignoring that for about 4 years following the deal virtually everyone called it a wash.

The falling out that the Sens had with Heatley doesn't change that.
 
So it looks like I was right all along (when Zibanejad was sent down to start the season in favour of Da Costa and Pageau).

Management stupid. corksense = smart.
