WHEN IS IT TIME FOR A COACHING CHANGE?

As far as Torts is concerned, I don't mind the fireworks and drama elsewhere, but don't want to see it here.

The only problem with Trotz is that he doesn't have a neck. His head sits on top of his shoulders. :wink How about a Poile/Trotz package?

If (when) Torts gets whacked in Vancouver, he'll walk away with a hefty golden parachute, estimated by this writer at $8 million. John Stephens is the leading candidate.

I love Torts. That has been established. And here's the thing with him ... yeah, he's crazy and his teams are only going to listen to that nonsense for so long. But he gets results when his players buy in. I don't think he was a good fit for a VERY established team culture in Vancouver, but you can't argue with results elsewhere. He gets a lot out of his guys.

Now ... I personally think Torts works best in small media markets like Tampa and Raleigh. In New York (and to a degree in Vancouver) it's pretty obvious that the media drove him even crazier than he already was. But in Tampa it was a much slower burn with those guys. Raleigh would be the same or similar. Chip, Luke and Company aren't going to be peppering the guy with tough questions, attitude and alternative ideas. I think he'd like it here ... and do well here ... IF he could get Eric Staal on his side. Presuming Eric Staal would still be around.

That said ... he's expensive and I doubt the Canes brass will pony up for him. Or Hitchcock for that matter, should be fall out of a job. IMO the Canes will probably end up with an AHL guy again. I just pray that it isn't Daniels. If we do see a recycled NHL coach, it'll be a lesser priced guy I think. Trotz might be a possibility, and you might want to keep some of those guys who have come up from the AHL and been let go over the last 4-5 years.

I am with you JB on Torts. I would love to see him in Raleigh and probably think the Raleigh media is even softer than Tampa for NHL coverage. He would have an easy time here.......players not so much!

While I acknowledge Trotz is an accomplished and good coach, I do not want him in Raleigh. For whatever reason I look at him and just see Paul Maurice hockey. Been there, done that.

I agree with the opinion that the Canes are not going to pony up the cash for an established veteran NHL head coach. While I would appreciate bringing in a guy with many years of NHL head coaching experience and success, I can't see the Canes paying that type of coach the scratch necessary to woo him here.

It will either be another AHL head coach, or someone who washed out quickly at the NHL level such as Kevin Dineen.

Hiring Torts would be the only thing that would drive me away.

I would completely and totally cut ties with this team. A narcissist will never have long term success. Torts is to arrogant to make the obvious and necessary changes.

You know what...that right there may in fact be true, but one of the many reasons why this outfit is clueless. Not piling on you CMal, but that kind of thinking and attitude coming from Edwards Mill Road is the whole problem why they suck farts so bad compared to real organizations that get it right. It really sticks in my craw to see the Canes go on the cheap for coaches and scouting and development yet waste boatloads of cash on overpaying guys on the ice that simply are not worth the investment.

Fix the scouting, the player development, the coaching, the power play...but to shy away from established coaches because of money and then wonder why your $7 and $8 million dollar a year players have no clue what to do on the PP is just plain stupid.

Vancouver is on the hook for $8m if they let torts go.
The canes would need to match+ this amount.

Agreed.

Spend a few more dollars and make 23+ players better, not to mention having a chance to form...you know...a team.

This is why Torts will not behind the bench in Carolina. Usually these deals are written a way so that such "severance" isn't paid out if the coach is gainfully employed by another NHL franchise for a comparable amount.

The Hockey Panel on TSN for Torts...slush fund cash while he is on his "severance" leave to get his $8 million from Vancouver.

Coach K reportedly made $9 million and Nick Satan $5 million. A Stanley Cup winner in professional sports makes $2 million by comparison.

I agree and would love for this to change. Think about all of the head coaches that have coached the Canes:

Paul Maurice - OHL assitant for 5 years, OHL head coach for 2 years (all with PK's junior program), NHL assistant for 1 year - then Whalers/Canes Head Coach
Peter Laviolette - Minor league assistant for 3 years, NHL assistant for 1 year, head coach of NYI for 2 seasons, Canes head coach
Kirk Muller - NHL assistant for 5 years, AHL head coach for 1 year, Canes head coach

The one coach we did hire with past NHL experience as a head coach won the Cup for us (well the team did, but he played a big role in changing the system from Maurice V1.0)

We really haven't brought in a veteran experienced NHL head coach since they became the Canes. If they are going to fire Muller, I sure would feel better about next season if we had an actual NHL head coach who has 'made the rounds' and found success with other teams. But I highly doubt PK, JR and GM X will go that route and that is a shame because we really could use a veteran NHL coach to end this culture of losing.

Recent cup winners:

Chicago - Joel Quenneville 11 years prior NHL head coaching experience prior to being hired by Chicago
LA Kings - Darryl Sutter 12 years prior NHL head coaching experience prior to be hired by LA
Boston - Claude Julian - 3 years (over 4 season) prior NHL head coaching experience prior to be hired by Boston
Pittsburgh - Dan Bylsma - AHL head coach hire (promotion)

Jeff Daniels or Kevin Dineen is the not the right answer for a new head coach. Let's actually get an experienced NHL head coach with years of battle scars (not Paul Maurice) to lead the team under a new GM. Its way past time to give this a try.

What about experienced former Whalers players who are already occupying current NHL positions. There are many. Maybe this is where having a guy like Francis who ties into that clubs past as GM can help swoon some of those back into the organization.
How would Evason or Ladouceur do here for example?

Ladouceur, to me anyways, is too close to Maurice having been his assistant for so long. Dean Evason is basically exactly where Kirk Muller was, long time NHL assistant, but he has at least completed (after this season) 2 years as an AHL head coach.

I would much rather have someone with more NHL head coaching experience than those 2. However if its Ronnie Francis as GM, I could envision him hiring Evason or Dineen as the next head coach with Ulf Samuelsson as an assistant.

Couple of things ...

1. Randy Ladoucer ... oh HELL no. So passive I'm constantly amazed he can stand upright.

2. Evason ... meh. If you're going the unproven route, you could do worse. At least he's got some fire.

3. Dineen ... also meh. I wasn't all that impressed with the job hye did in Florida and this one might be even trickier in terms of personnel.

4. Vancouver axed Gillis today, so that means the owner decided to keep Torts and dump the GM. Fine. Ity was probably cheaper.

5. Gillis as GM instead of Francis? I know I would call him up, but I doubt Karmanos is even capable of thinking that way.

Ladies and Gentleman, next year's new Canes GM: Mike Gillis.
How about Dave Tippett for coach? He's got more coaching experience right?
Don't get me wrong, if we could get Bowman to be a coach again, even at his age, he'd be my first choice to fill the experienced NHL coach criteria.

No Gillis please. I've heard enough detailed rants from Boomer Gordon on that guy that I wouldn't want Gillis anywhere near the Canes. Vancouver dumping him was well overdue.
