Leafs/Habs/Sens 2014-15

When was the last time the NHL had this good a year for rookies?

In Ekblad, you've got an 18 year-old defenseman who's played 1st pairing minutes all year and score 12 goals/38 points. In Stone & Gaudreau, you've got two forwards who scored about 25 goals/65 points and played a big role in leading their teams to unexpected playoff berths.

Then that's not even counting Filip Forsberg, who looked like he'd run away with the Calder for the first half of the season, and ultimately hit 25 goals/60 points. There's forgotten man John Klingberg in Dallas, who also played a top-pairing role as a rookie defenseman, and scored at a 15 goal/50 point pace in 64 games after getting called up from the AHL.

None of those guys would be a bad choice, and two teams will rightfully feel ripped off when their guy isn't even nominated for the Calder. I suspect the race for the 2015/16 Calder trophy will be a little less wide-open, though.

It doesn't bother me, but I won't lie---I'd have preferred if the Sens' run had come up just short. That would've been funny.

Still, if a Montreal/Ottawa first round playoff series can actually come to fruition, that'll make for an entertaining series.

EKblad's season is the most impressive of the bunch considering his age and role, just crazy stuff, but yeah, excellent season for rookies. Might be calling Klingberg the favourite if he had played the entire season, with his offensive output. Also steady as hell defensively.

Here's my problem with Stone winning it...Gaudreau has slightly outproduced him, on an also unlikely playoff team in the harder conference.

Forsberg matched him in production, as the leading scorer on another western conference playoff team.

How is what Stone did any more impressive than either of those seasons? The 3 forwards are a toss up. Ekblad, doing what he's done as a 18 yr old outshines the lot of them imo. Defenders just don't do what he's done as a 18 yr old. He's better than Doughty was at 19, better than Pronger as a 19 yr old rookie, etc. Ekblad's rookie season is fairly historic.

Facts really aren't your strong suit.

For the record, I don't give a shit if they give it to Stone. Just glad he's part of the new core of Sens.

Heh. "Completely wrong" because 0 of the stats sites had updated when I referenced them to see how Forsberg/Stone/Gaudreau compare.

This version of th Sens is my favourite ever. Sure they've had teams with a lot more talent that dominated the league, but no Sens team in the past has shown this level of character and compete.

Easy to love a tam like that.
 
Good for the Sens. Gotta' give them credit for the way they played down the stretch and they could give teams some trouble early on in the playoffs.

Gaudreau didn't out produce him. They have the same total of points - with Stone having two more goals.

We also have Stone with a +21 to Gaudreau's +11. Though we all know the failings of +/-. But most importantly Stone leads the entire league - not just rookies - in take aways. His two-way game and play in the 2nd half puts him ahead to me.

That's the beauty of a young team - we didn't do it on the backs of a bunch of vets. We did it on a bunch of guys in their 20's. They should have legs.

I'm more worried about mental fatigue.

At the beginning of the day, Johnny G was up 2 points on Stone.

Fair enough. There's a **** hair's difference between the 3 rookie forwards if we're starting to reach into shit like +/- and takeaways to find something. Definitely not enough to justify picking any one of the 3 over Ekblad.
