OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Probably because the Blue Jays voted for contraction when they could have abstained or ceremonially voted against it.

There was this feeling prior to that though.

I do think that was a mistake by the Jays. They should have talked with MLB privately and stated they were officially voting against out of principle. It would not have changed anything for the league.

This idea though that the Jays "Stole" the Expos audience is ridiculous. No one in Montreal's business community stepped-up to help them.

also, last night is a bit hazy but i'm pretty sure somebody told me that the decision to close the roof for games 1 and 2 was made by the commissioner's office and that it was fueled in part because the donkeys didn't realize that 15 celcius is 60 degrees. is that true?

probably because everybody in montreal's business community now lives in toronto.

It was made by the commissioner's office. The other part I'm not sure. Although on live tv I did see the commish talk about the cold weather during game 2 being the reason. Although game 1 was warm and they still closed it. Could be something to it.

so what would they have done if toronto didn't have a retractable roof - moved the toronto games to florida?

Well there's that too.

The expos failures are in big part with Montreal regression.

The separatists get to "Get Back" at the English by destroying their own economy. Smart...

You don't like true baseball?

This is as ridiculous as someone chirping about traditional marriage. It's only "true baseball" because you don't have the faintest **** what that really means. Baseball has consistently made changes to the sport over the years to make it better. The designated hitter is one of those things.

Just like the HR fence, raised mound, relief pitchers, adding black guys, etc.

Regardless of how one feels about the DH, a lack of DH makes in-game managing/strategy more nuanced and interesting. Namely how do you manage the "dead" 9 spot. When do you sac or pinch hit? When do you double switch. Also, not having a dedicated hitter taking care of all the ABs, resources on the bench/bullpen are more scarce thus requiring more management. Not to mention, less slugging = more small ball tactics.

There's a reason the American league beats the piss out of the National in interleague play every year.

All of that stuff is cute, but we understand the game now in a way that simply wasn't understood when those tactics were developed...and they cost a team runs more often than they actually create them.

Earl Weaver figured it out a half century ago, pre DH. He hated small ball and said "winning = pitching, defence and three run homers"

Incidentally, not all winning tactics are fun to watch (ie... Extreme infield shifts in baseball)
