GDT: Canes vs Wild 3/23, 7:00 pm
Carolina hosts the Wild to wrap up their season series, and it's the last Homegrown night at PNC for the season. If you can manage to remember all the way back to October, the Canes won a terrifically entertaining game against the Wild ... 5-4 in OT. That one featured Justin Williams' first goal of the season (a late one) to tie it up and send it to OT where Aho did the honors for the W. That was back when Carolina was just starting to cultivate their fun image ... less with post game antics and more with fast break, shot heavy hockey. Ah, how young and naive we all were back then.
Nino Niedeireitter's contributions to that game were minimal, but in the other team's colors. And of course he's a story going into this one as his career resurgence left plenty of egg on the faces of Minny's personnel guys. But the Wild have plowed through a rough fall and early winter to find them selves in the thick of the playoff race in the West. They sit in Wildcard 2 , one point ahead of Colorado who have a game in hand. Precarious times. Carolina installed Nino on the first line, where he promptly started producing first line points and helped to drive the Canes into the playoff hunt. Carolina is in Wildcard 1 position, and will stay there regardless of what happens tonight.
Canes are banged up heading into this game. Cal de Haan is playing his way through recovery from a horrific blow to the eye, Nino and Aho tangled legs on Thursday and both looked gimpy, Jordan Staal survived a snuff shot to the head on Thursday and has to be feeling it even if he didn't miss significant game time. Brindy told Sara Civian this morning that the whole roster is a gametime decision ... and I think he was only half joking. It's March in the NHL. Everybody's beat up. Mr Azek is in net for Carolina, and there's a chance that Alex Stalock will be manning the crease for the Wild since Dubnyk played last night in DC. There's a significant drop-off between the two, so they might try to push it with Dubnyk. If so, Carolina needs to be all up in his personal space forcing him to burn whatever's in the tank early.
Should be a good matchup. See you there ... or tune in ... whatever.
