2019 Carolina Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Not entertaining trade offers is front office malpractice. Always answer the phone. You never know when Paul Fenton will be on the other end.

Your quote above reminded me that today is the first official day that Ron Francis is officially off the Canes payroll, ownership, etc. Already being rumored to be in the running for the Seattle GM job.

For the record, there is a LOT of childish hand wringing going on over that LeBrun quote. Mostly overly emotional fan types who don't understand anything about the practicalities of RFA negotiations, but also from some in the media who ought to know better.

Bottom line ... Carolina has ONE shot to negotiate another reasonable contract with Aho. This is the last contract window they have when they retain his rights AND he doesn't have arbitration rights. If management doesn't use that leverage then, to quote Andy, it is front office malpractice. To bitch and moan about the optics because you're either paranoid or impatient is moronic. Yeah, Aho will get his money ... eventually. Neither the player nor the team want to part ways and there's absolutely nothing that has actually happened to change that. The pot stirring press dolts who love this kind of thing can throw around their fictional offer sheets all they want, but the hard reality is that all their stories about those things ... Chris Gratton!! Dustin Penner!!! ... happened YEARS ago. Not a single RFA offer sheet has been signed since 2013 and not a single RFA offer sheet has gone unmatched by the original team since Penner's in 2000 freaking 7. Carolina won't lose Aho to an offer sheet. They just won't. Which means NOTHING is going to happen today with regards to Aho.

We need a goalie. You want to freak out about something real, freak out about that.

@ice_chip: Patrick Brown getting a new start with Vegas. Good man, solid-citizen type of player.

Good for Brownie. He got a two year deal with the 2nd year being a one way NHL contract. He wasn't getting that here, and honestly I'm not sure why it got it from Vegas. Good guy, solid player, probably ready to center a 4th line in the NHL ... probably. And it's the probably that kept Carolina from committing to a one way contract.

Even better for him, the first year has a $450k guarantee.

You're right. Absolutely nothing will happen today.

McGinn filed for arbitration ... not unexpected. This is his first shot at an arbitration eligible negotiation, so that was a formality.

OK ... Aho's done, the goalie is signed, the Canes have made some moves to add depth and they've basically let the veterans in the AHL (or on the AHL/NHL line) go try their hand with other teams. So, what's left?

Williams ... local media are fixated on this one, but since I expect Carolina to reduce William's role if he does re-sign I really don't think this is priority one.

Support offense ... this is a bigger issue than Williams and I hope that Carolina addresses it eventually. With Aho's deal done and McGinn filing for arbitration, they should have a pretty good handle on the worst case salary budget. Chances are very good that they'll get Maenalanen and Bishop locked up to join McGinn ... so technically they've got 13 legit NHL forwards even without Williams factoring in. So I guess you could just plug Necas in, move Williams down a notch and call it a day. I'd really like to see another option on the wing added eventually though. Not so much a Ferland replacement but you can call it that if you want. I mean, ironically enough this team was better when Ferland was a non-factor than they were when he was on the first line pinging in goals.

Defense ... mostly contract stuff here. They still need to get Fleury and Forsling signed to new deals and then they're probably set. I think there's still some lingering suspicion that they might move a right D but I don't think so. TVR will be out for the start of the season and the depth behind him in the right side is basically just McKeown ... who isn't signed yet and in whom the team have never really shown any faith.

Bottom line ... we might be done, and I think you could make a pretty good argument that standing pat is the smartest play. You're still going to over-pay for any of the remaining free agents and maybe it's wiser to wait and see how the Williams situation unfolds first. You've still got a lot of depth resources and picks you can leverage into a player if you need one. Maybe wait and see if there's not a deal to be had for somebody who gets an arbitration award their team doesn't like. Adding Huala and Necas to the mix makes you more offensive already, and the grunt stuff seems to be pretty well covered. So if you see a move for a part that fits, do it ... otherwise, maybe just roll on.

Forgot one thing ... Carolina still needs to make a couple of staff hires. Goalie coach vetting is apparently in process, and they'll need to add an AHL coach. Neither of those is moving the needle right now, but they are still open boxes on the summer to-do list.

Any chances of another "help a team out of their cap problem by fleecing them from a player perspective? (but still a win-win)

I still dont see a Ferland replacement on the wing, and I'm not even suggesting it has to be a Ferland type of player, just an established winger that can play well in the top 9 forward group. It would not hurt the Canes to still have that big body winger that can throw his body around like Ferland...so if I had my wish based on who is still out there I would say a guy like Pat Maroon fits the bill. Another guy that would be a fit here but likely too expensive is Marcus Johansson, he can play all three forward positions and really would give the Canes choices up front in terms of line combinations. If they knew Williams was not coming back, that's the type of forward that would have been nice to sign to compliment what you already have up front.

Honestly, with only $11 million available under the cap and a couple of depth guys left to sign, I think Carolina is out of that game ... especially if it would mean adding a contract with any real term in it. Their effective cap space right now is more like $7-8 million. That's more likely to be buffer than anything else.

I think Carolina was actually interested in Johansson but adding Huala filled that need. You only add Johansson if you want him back at his natural position and he's an expensive option considering the centers Carolina currently has on the roster. Maroon is a luxury item. He's too slow to do anything much in the regular season, but VERY good when things get dirty in the playoffs. I don't see Carolina as the kind of team that carries a guy like that on the 4th line, and that's all he'd be here.

I'm not saying you don't look to add another big body. I'm just saying that I think whatever you change needs to be significantly better than just going with Foegele and Martinook.

I agree that sorting out the situation with Justin Williams is not an urgent priority, but it sure would be nice to know where he stands on playing or not playing as soon as possible, so that we can make any necessary preparations. I'd like Willy back (even in a reduced capacity role) just for his solid leadership. We'll need a steady hand to confirm we're truly "relevant" and to show that this past season was not an anomaly.

Meh. The Canes are relevant with or without Williams. In fact, I like the lineup quit a bit, although we don't have a ton of cover if Svech has a sophomore slump.

Not saying I don't want him back. I'd love to see Willie back, because he's got more leadership to offer and I think he's got 10-12 minutes a night left in the tank.

Some of the chatter on the other threads has me looking at the Metro and thinking about this idea that everybody's getting better this off season. Ya know what? I don't think that's really as true as people seem to think. I don't think Pittsburgh has done a single thing that makes sense, and Washington hasn't done anything at all really other than chip away at their support scoring. The Isles have probably gotten worse to this point and the Blue Jackets DEFINITELY have gotten worse. The Rangers and Devils have gotten a LOT better, but they were starting pretty far back from the pack.

Again, it's early days in terms of camp rosters but I have no issues with where the Canes currently sit compared to their direct competition.

And Columbus lost Bob, Panarin and Duchene and signed Gus Nyquist. They got worse too.
