OK ... Aho's done, the goalie is signed, the Canes have made some moves to add depth and they've basically let the veterans in the AHL (or on the AHL/NHL line) go try their hand with other teams. So, what's left?
Williams ... local media are fixated on this one, but since I expect Carolina to reduce William's role if he does re-sign I really don't think this is priority one.
Support offense ... this is a bigger issue than Williams and I hope that Carolina addresses it eventually. With Aho's deal done and McGinn filing for arbitration, they should have a pretty good handle on the worst case salary budget. Chances are very good that they'll get Maenalanen and Bishop locked up to join McGinn ... so technically they've got 13 legit NHL forwards even without Williams factoring in. So I guess you could just plug Necas in, move Williams down a notch and call it a day. I'd really like to see another option on the wing added eventually though. Not so much a Ferland replacement but you can call it that if you want. I mean, ironically enough this team was better when Ferland was a non-factor than they were when he was on the first line pinging in goals.
Defense ... mostly contract stuff here. They still need to get Fleury and Forsling signed to new deals and then they're probably set. I think there's still some lingering suspicion that they might move a right D but I don't think so. TVR will be out for the start of the season and the depth behind him in the right side is basically just McKeown ... who isn't signed yet and in whom the team have never really shown any faith.
Bottom line ... we might be done, and I think you could make a pretty good argument that standing pat is the smartest play. You're still going to over-pay for any of the remaining free agents and maybe it's wiser to wait and see how the Williams situation unfolds first. You've still got a lot of depth resources and picks you can leverage into a player if you need one. Maybe wait and see if there's not a deal to be had for somebody who gets an arbitration award their team doesn't like. Adding Huala and Necas to the mix makes you more offensive already, and the grunt stuff seems to be pretty well covered. So if you see a move for a part that fits, do it ... otherwise, maybe just roll on.
