Play-in Round: Toronto Maple Leafs (8) vs Columbus Blue Jackets (9)

I wonder if Keefe goes with a Rielly-Holl pairing and plays them like 30min, with Muzzin out.

funny looking xg results so far, which of course isn't surprising in a tiny meaningless sample:

xgf/60

Muzzin-Holl: 2.43
Dermott-Barrie: 1.46
Rielly-Ceci: 1.03

xga/60

Dermott-Barrie: 1.27
Rielly-Ceci: 1.45
Muzzin-Holl: 2.96

xgf%

Dermott-Barrie: 53.6%
Muzzin-Holl: 46.1%
Rielly-Ceci: 41.4%

I don't really care about the realm of the expected anymore.

In the world of reality, there have been some interesting developments from the first two games:

-the soft inept cowering Leaf defence that Columbus were going to shred with their incredible death star forecheck has allowed precisely one laugher on Freddy in 6 periods of hockey. Fred spent most of game 2 sipping gatorade

-the unbelievably intimidating physical play of the Jackets, surely more than the pathetic soft Leafs could handle, has had little impact on Toronto besides a fluke fall hurting Muzzin.

-Auston Matthews is showing himself to be a playoff stud even against incredibly hard teams to score on.

-Robertson has absolutely been thrown into the deep end here, and you know what, he's done alright. Kid is a future top 6 forward without a doubt.

for the record, the "expected" just quantifies the "reality" you described in that second sentence there.

As someone who has liked Muzzin the most since he first joined the team, I have to say he hasn't been playing well in this series so far.

My first choice would be to slide Derms up with Holl. However, might not be a great idea, as Derms-Barrie has been quite good this series (no doubt because they're facing forward plugs). So, maybe just slide Rielly down and put Ceci with Marincin.

That said, Keefe might put Marincin with Holl because that was, if I'm not mistaken, his go to pairing in the Marlies Calder win.

puck-exit guys: rielly, Holl, Dermott, Barrie

non-puck exit guys: Ceci, Marincin

I think Marincin-Ceci is a definite no-go for keefe.

regular season numbers:

Dermott-Holl 51.3xgf% (in pretty tough usage)
Marincin-Holl 52.7xgf% (in solid usage)
Marincin-Barrie 52.7xgf% (in solid usage)
Dermott-Ceci 57.1xgf% (in pretty soft usage)

Dermott stepping into Muzzin’s role would be my preference, but then there aren't really a whole lot of good choices with the other pairings. Leaving Ceci with Rielly and pairing up Marincin with Barrie seems less than optimal, but I don't know what other choice we have.
