2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

They should just decline any bowl bid from here on out.
With that TD, they cover the largest spread in CFP history, they went off as 19.5 point dogs. That is unless Bama takes the kickoff and scores.

edit: or not, since ND recovered the onside kick.

actually from 1925 to 1969 ND did not accept any bowl bids. Not sure why other than maybe exams? There were very few bowls most of those years so they left a slot open for another team. They were a top 10 team many of those years. They went to 1924 Rose Bowl but no bowls before that year. Knute Rockne years were 1918-1930 .

Bowls were beneath them.

I forgot that Clemson won last year's game against Ohio State mostly because of that awful call that negated the Buckeyes' fumble recovery/TD play. Clemson is worse than Notre Dame right now.

All of this is part of the reason I don't care for college football. Notre Dame is still treated like some sort of sacred entity when the reality is they are just another 'next tier' team that hasn't deserved the reverence they get today for over 20 years. I understand that they have that mystique and a huge following, but that is because of successes from a long time ago. Can we start treating them as just another ACC football program now? That is really all they are.

Well, they ran the table in the ACC regular season, aided by Lawrence missing the game in South Bend. But if not them, who? Texas A&M? They lost to Bama by 28. Cincinnati? They didn’t play anyone, the constant argument against non-Power 5 teams. Coastal Carolina? See Cincy. Two loss Oklahoma? You can make an argument that they were playing as well as any team at the end of the season, their 2 losses were in weeks 2 and 3.

Is it possible that Clemson has been overrated the last 2 years? They beat Ohio St. on a blown call, then blew a 10 point lead in the final, losing by 17 after climbing back into it.

It’s all about TV and until the time that Notre Dame can’t carry a network package on their own, they’re always going to be in the conversation. Their NBC contract runs until 2025. Maybe when that expires, they’ll be forced into the ACC full time, but not until then.

Imagine if any other US sport picked playoff teams partly based on TV ratings? They would be a laughing stock and rightly so. You would have the Yankees in the playoffs over teams with better records. Same with Red Sox, Cowboys, Lakers, Packers, etc.

I think NBC is likely to extend ND contract as long as ratings are about the same as they are now. They might pay less and ND will probably be OK with less unless it's a big drop.

The networks pick games based on ratings, real or imagined. That’s why the Canes have 1 NBC game and Detroit and Chicago have 13 between them.

And I go back to my question...if not Notre Dame, who? Yes, they‘re a big TV draw but that’s not why they were picked. But it’s certainly why they’re included with the Power 5 conferences for CFP and New Year’s 6 bowl game purposes.

usually high roller donors fund a lot of the buyouts. Because in many cases the high rollers demand the guy get fired. Doesn't matter if the AD or chancellor want to keep the guy, if the high rollers want him gone, he's gone. Auburn has a banker who is their big donor. Rumor has it Amato was axed partly for not kissing up enough to big donors. He did not even want them at practices at first. In other words if your name is on a college building you pretty much can get a guy fired after just 1 bad year . That's why ECU fired Steve Logan, he did not like kissing butts of donors and had a down year .

Tenn big donor is the guy Haslam who owns the Browns. If he wants a guy out , that's all that matters. And yes his name is on a building and the business school is named for him. And his brother was Tenn governor for 8 years

Texas fired Tom Herman. They owe him $15 million and the staff $24 million. Bama OC and former Washington and USC head coach Steve Sarkisian is supposedly the leading candidate. Before the season, he got a $850k raise to $2.5 million.

The NHL cancelled the Winter Classic but Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion are playing one in the British Midlands, it’s snowing like crazy in West Bromwich.

like I said if the big donors want you gone , you are gone. Herman is said to have a bad personality. You can have that if you win big. Like Bobby Knight but when he started not winning as much out the door he went.

And the new Texas coach was average at best in the Pac 12 and was fired for showing up at more than 1 practice drunk. Maybe he's sober now.

I’ve watched more bowl games than I really care for. The games have been OK but the constant stream of platitudes from the play by play announcers at this level is tiring at best. The quality of commentary in college sports is comparable to the quality of officiating in th NHL.

Florida coach complained he had to play 3rd or 4th stringers so that's why they lost their bowl. At least no ACC coach said something like that

Although several of them could have. Plenty of depth guys were thrust into the void by a variety of teams this post season. It's almost like we shouldn't get all bent out of shape about these results or something ....

NCAA confirmed 2021 BB tourney will be in Indiana only. Besides Indy they are using Purdue, Butler, and Indiana arenas. Also a small place on the Indy fairgrounds along with Lucas Dome and the Pacers arena. They could have more BB arenas right here in the Triangle closer together.

We probably don’t have the hotel space to accommodate that many teams. But with PNC, Reynolds, Cameron, Dean Dome and Carmichael, you’re probably right about gyms. Purdue isn’t that close to Indianapolis, it’s about 70 miles away.

I remember as a kid in the 70s Dorton had pro wrestling many Tues. nights. Even had people like Ric Flair when he was starting out. WRAL used to tape 2 wrestling shows a week and I went to a taping it was fun and free. I think by the time IceCaps started up wrestling was mostly gone from Dorton. I saw a few concerts there. Dorton is pretty much a dump but I guess they keep it open for the fair and other stuff with small crowds. It has no AC so summer stuff is bad there. Reynolds had no AC until the recent renovation. I think they also finally added AC to Cameron.

No Dorton Arena? ;)
Home of the late, not so great Raleigh Bullfrogs of the Global League. The ABA Carolina Cougars played some of their games in Dorton for a portion of their time on earth as well. Wonder why a pro team that actively played in four arenas in three cities had trouble setting down roots? Weird, right? The Cougars played in the Charlotte Coliseum (when it was rat infested), the Greensboro Coliseum, Dorton and Reynolds ... sometimes during the same season's schedule. It was beyond stupid. The games were fun though, and tickets were dirt cheap. My Dad and I used to enjoy watching leisure suited Larry Brown coach Jumping Jo Caldwell, Billy Cunningham and Mack Calvin a couple of times a year.

Sorry ... memory lane. Ignore me.
