2021 Hurricanes Miscellaneous Thread

Early spring semester I recall
Yeah ... no details on time of year for me. I just remember enjoying the show a bunch and then driving back to Raleighwood the same night ... which was ... let's go with dumb.

I saw the Kinks at McNichols Arena in Denver around that same time. Weed was decriminalized and abundant at the time too. Good times...what I remember of them.

Jim

$12.50 and $10.50!!!! Front row 'packages' for a show like that today would be almost $1000. Nose bleeds would be over $50.

That was after an increase! For my first arena show (Aerosmith in the Nassau Coliseum in 1979), lower level and floor was $8.50 and upper level was $7.50.

My wife dug out a ticket stub from a double bill we went to in Greensboro in the mid-80s ... The Cars and Heart for $20 per head. Floor seats. Heck, I remember thinking tickets to a huge Amnesty International concert in Atlanta were expensive at $75 per head. And we got to see The Police, Peter Gabriel and U2 that day ... on top of Joan freaking Baez, the Neville Brothers and a bunch of others.

I'm sure I missed it somewhere around here, but thoughts on Gardiner? I know he was awful early last year, but he started coming around in Spring; and I don't think he was so bad as to get lost in conversation completely. Our #2 PP unit could have used some offensive presence.

For Billy Joel at Nassau in 1977 or 78 on The Stranger tour, I paid $17.50 for seats just off the corner of the stage. That included round trip bus transportation from Wayne, NJ to Nassau.

What happens to Jake Gardiner might depend on what happens with Dougie and the expansion draft. If Dougie IS GOING TO sign AND/OR we lose, say, Skjei in the expansion draft (I'm assuming we protect Bean), then I could possible see the Canes trying to salvage another season out of Gardiner in a hopes he can return to some sort of NHL caliber. If Dougie re-signs (or gives an indication that he will re-sign) and we still have Slavin, Pesce, Bean, Skjei after the expansion draft I think we would buy Gardiner out for sure. Really either way though, I would PREFER the Canes just buy Gardiner out.

Forgetting about all of the escrow/deferment adjustments, buying out Gardiner saves almost $2.9 million in real cash and knocks his cap hit each of the next 2 years from $4,025,000 per to $1,291,667, $1,041,667, then 2 more years of $1,441,667. I think he is cooked and would rather have the Canes move on from him no matter what. But the Canes might end up with just Slavin, Pesce and Bean if/when Dougie gets his huge payday elsewhere and if Ronnie decides to grab Skjei and not someone like Foegle. If its clear Dougie is leaving and we lose a Dman in the expansion draft, then maybe the Canes don't buy out Gardiner.

The buyout period will start soon after the Cup Finals end. That will be BEFORE the expansion draft but the buyout period will end AFTER the expansion draft (but before UFA opens). So I would say don't expect the Canes to make a buyout move on Gardiner until after the expansion draft.

I think his back is shot and he is nowhere close to being 100% healthy. I'm not sure if that means surgery (never an easy decision) in the off season or what, but Brindy seems to have zero confidence in the guy and you usually know what that means...

Yeah ... Gardiner's situation is 100% dependent on Dougie's, IMO. You simply have to start the year with 2 decent options to run the point on the power play, and as much of a downgrade as Gardiner/Bean is compared to Hamilton/Bean, you've got to protect yourself there. If the Canes re-sign Dougie, then I'd say Gardiner is a candidate to be bought out ... if they can't talk him into back surgery and LTIR. Without something being done to fix his physical issues, the guy is toast.
