The Fucking Offseason Thread - Why bother waiting?

I think the gap between guys like Hyman/Landeskog and Tatar/Schwartz isn't very big, but the gap in contract will be. Would love to get one of the latter on a 2 year deal. Both good two way wingers, with skill.

Also don't know what it would cost, but I'd pay Seattle to take on $2 mill of JVRs contract. He's still awesome and makes his living in the dirty areas. He'd change the dynamic on the PP too. 2 years $5 mill would be great value. Appleton is another guy I'd be interested in paying Seattle to take. A $900k Hyman replacement.

Garland is the ideal target.

I assume they see McCann as a Kefoot replacement, rather than a Hyman replacement. Finding centers is just so much harder than wingers. There are 3 possible options on the UFA market and they are all ancient (Krejci, Bonino, Stastny).

HMMMMMMMMMMM, I do love JVR....................

I dunno, if this would ever happen but some creative thinking here.

I would be shocked if he got less than $7m AAV. And unsurprised if it's over $8m.

I feel like this is heading towards the same result as last year's Pietro speculation...
Nah, AP was in a different class. Landy isn't exactly a top ten forward or anything.

Only problem with JVR is that I generally don't believe in looking back.

Fresh blood that is equivalent or better is preferred.

he's the top UFA winger. he is a under 30. he is truculent. he has offensive talent. he has good counting numbers (perhaps thanks to his linemates). and he has major leaderbeanz, being the youngest captain ever and all. he's gonna get paid by someone.

care to make a friendly wager on his contract? over $7M AAV, you can only say nice things about Wayne Simmonds for the 2021 calendar year. under $7M AAV, ???

Garland is still my top choice though. He checks all the boxes. He’s the right age, his best years are ahead of him unlike the UFA class and he’s under control for at least 2 full years, unlike rentals. He brings the energy we’re losing in Hyman, but also an edge that they don’t really have. But he still has high end skill, and can drive a line.

I think Garland-Tavares-Willy would be an amazing line. Like Gallagher-Danault-Tatar but with talent. Which I guess is Marchand-Bergeron-Pasternak.

If you have to pay a top prospect like Lilly or Amirov I would. Sign him for 4-5 years at $5-6 mill. whatever you trade for him isn’t going to have anywhere close to the same impact over the next few years.

I think I'd win but those stakes are too damn high!

still like the idea of garland over some of the other suggestions i've heard.

any new possible names?

Some sneaky names to consider in trade:

Kubalik (2.24 P/60 over 2 seasons, decent nerdies overall), Marcus Foligno is probably a lot closer to being the Foligno we thought we were getting with Nick (2.36 P/60, gritastic nerdies), the previously mentioned Foegele looks a lot like Feet for Hands Hyman before he grew a hand.

Tatar probably the best value play in free agency, Nikita Gusev is a skill midget but might be interested in a 1 yr show me for next to nothing. Had a solid 1st year with the devils, disaster of a 2nd season. Schwartz is worth a look at. If we can get Bonino for reasonable money, he's moved past Stastny as my choice for 3C on a 2-3 yr deal.

I get the interest in Garland, but I don't see the separation between him and a pile of guys we can get for cheaper and/or in free agency to justify the acquisition cost and then the immediate 5.5+ million dollar deal with term.

So is there an order to this draft tomorrow or can Francis mess with Bergevin and leave the Montreal selection for last?
