2021-22 Season Hurricanes Misc. Thread

I guess I've just gotten used to Tripp over all these years. Yes, he does go on and on....but he also makes some first-rate observations that really help in understanding the play (or players). I think he and Mike are working pretty well together, especially as Mike works to perfect his role. Once he gets there, he won't need to depend as much on Tripp.
I do believe that Tripp needs to tone down the “bro” stuff with Svetch just a bit. Makes me cringe.

Yeah, Tripp's always one sentence away from inducing a cringe. It's part of his "charm"
Seriously, Tripp still bothers me sometimes but the guy's heart is 100% in the right place.

The Canes have hired Scott Burnside to the content team, and he'll provide reporting and participate in the team podcast as well as making appearances on the TV/radio broadcasts. Burnside is a familiar face, having spent a long time at ESPN and a short time at The Athletic. He was working with the Stars the last couple of years. Nice.

Holy crap!

That is pretty unexpected. Scott is a legit national guy that people actually know. I wonder how that hiring came to be.

I know only one thing ... it can't be costing much money. Either that or else they're generating more revenue from that dumb podcast than I thought possible.

Either that or Frank Seravalli is paying him a boatload at The Daily Faceoff.

This is an outstanding development...Scott does some good work.

Burnside was on the telecast tonight and is great! What a nice addition overall and I have been a fan of his work for years.

Looking at November's schedule for the Hurricanes and it's freaking brutal in terms of logistics alone. Starts with a trip to Chicago followed by a long weekend in Florida. Back home for a back to back set with the Flyers and Blues, then the West Coast swing which now includes Vegas and Seattle. Flying home at that point? Nope ... flying to Philly for some stupid reason. Then home, but only for one game with the Caps before finishing off the month in Dallas.

Look, I'm not complaining about just my team, because several teams have had equally ridiculous stretches thus far. I know the schedule is compressed and all, but the way the league handled their parameters for the road vs home mix has been COMPLETELY different this season than in years past. And not for the better.

And a 4 day break after the Nashville game?

Not only do they have to fly from Seattle to Philly, the game in Philly is 3:30. So they’ll land just before dawn on Thursday, get to the hotel and have their internal clocks disrupted further with a matinee instead of a normal game time the next day.

And the game in Dallas is followed by home games against Ottawa and Buffalo and then back out west for Winnioeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Minnesota. Starting with the game in Winnipeg on 12/7, they’re playing every other day until Chrsitmas, wrapping up in Ottawa on 12/23.

Yeah ... I've looked at the rest of the Metro schedules and pretty much everybody has at least one month that makes no logical sense whatsoever ... unless the intention was to torture the players for pushing so hard for the Olympics. It's freaking brutal.

I still don't see how any NHL players are going to China. That would be a huge nope.
The deadline for the opt out option for the NHL/NHLPA as far as the Olympics go is sometime in early January I believe. So far the NHL schedule hasn't been disrupted yet by Covid cancellations, but that is one of the agreed to situations where the NHL could pull the plug (if they need to use the schedule Olympic break to make up NHL games).

The other more general opt out reason of course is 'If Covid conditions worsen'. That is vague enough that one could argue that on either side pretty easily.

Remember though, the NHL has carved out their schedule for this and the NHLPA and the players have expressed a strong desire to play in the Olympics. Its going to take a substantial negative turn in direction as far as COVID is concerned for the NHL and NHLPA to opt out of the Olympics. What I would say is more likely is that you have more individual players who are invited to play for their teams elect not to go due to COVID fears.

I will be very surprised if the NHL/NHLPA elect to pull out of the Olympics.

With all the rules, restrictions, and guidelines in place regarding Covid, letting them go to China just seems stupid and counterproductive.

The NHL, NHLPA, IIHF and IOC negotiated an agreement with open eyes regarding the risks and necessary protocols to reduce the risk.

The players wanted this, so much so that the NHL used this desire to help get the NHLPA to agree to extend the CBA. The NHL would be happier if players never participated in the Olympics. That said, the NHL also likes labor harmony and the basic structure of the current CBA.

If the NHL and NHLPA are truly in a productive partnership, it would be pretty disingenuous of the NHL to just shut down Olympic participation altogether. They used it as a bargaining chip, and both sides bargained Olympic game participation.

I get what you are say Kahuna, but the Olympics are a huge deal to the players. They understand the risks. They understand the very strict protocols that will likely be in place to allow them to participate, hopefully safely.

Do I want Aho, Necas, Nino, Svech and Freddie (and maybe Turbo and Slavin) shipping off to China in February? Absolutely not if I had a choice. But the NHL and NHLPA agreed to go, so that is the end of it as far as I am concerned. It would take a huge swing in the wrong direction as far as COVID goes to cause the NHL and NHLPA to back out.

The Canes are practicing before flying out to Chicago. Abby says it’s very rowdy team and Trocheck has shaved his beard, he’s participating in Movember. Walt Ruff brings us the return of 1st line Martinook.
