Ben Chiarot dealt to Panthers

Excellent. Even though the Panthers will be good again next year the first in 2023 is preferred. I know nothing about the prospect though.

BTW, greetings to all from Manilla.
I’ve watched him play down here for Quinnipiac, skilled but he plays scared & small. I don’t see him ever making it to the NHL, but anything possible I guess

He did make the US WJC team which is impressive enough. Anyway I would have been fine with Chariot for the first straight up.

The pick will in all likelihood be in the twenties range. Not much different from a high second, probably. I find it hard to get excited about that , But the return was about as well as we could do, and we needed to do it. There's always the gamble of Florida falling off the map in 2023, but you can't factor that in really.

The teams willing to give up a first rounder for a player down the stretch of course are all going to pick late.

A long playoff run can lead to a middle of the pack year for Florida.

Still can't believe we tricked another team into giving us a first rounder-plus for Chiarot lol.
Ben's biggest problem is that his hockey IQ/hockey sense is VERY low. Otherwise he's fine. But that low hockey IQ is especially problematic for a d-man. It's much less noticeable in a forward.

Scott Wheeler's take on Smilanic:

8. Ty Smilanic, C, 20 (Quinnipiac University)

After an impressive freshman year with the Bobcats, Smilanic has been equally impactful as a sophomore without taking a pronounced step forward. He’s got great north-south speed, he stays on top of pucks on the forecheck, he protects the puck both out wide and in tight to his body beautifully, and he’s got a scorer’s touch around the net because of his timing and aggression. He’s an attack mentality player who goes at defenders head on and plays hard. I like the way he applies back and forward pressure, I like him in transition, I like his release, and I like his approach. He’s already a very good college player and I suspect he’ll be a very good AHL one if he gets signed out of Quinnipiac. But the question with Smilanic has always been whether his well-rounded game will be enough to make it beyond the AHL. I think with the right development, he’s got complementary NHL upside. But he slots into the area of an organization’s depth chart where you’re not expecting every kid to hit but one from every handful at each position.

he was solid last year in the playoffs

He is a nice add for a stacked Florida team

Almost every Fla player is having a career year… probability would state reversion to the mean is a given

Big risk ( ask Ottawa and SJS ) doling out future picks with no protection

I would never hand one out unless its top 10 protected
Then it’s difficult to get complimentary players as a serious contender. A good gm will take risk when warranted . You only get a legitimate chance at the cup so many times.

I'm sure the protected was negotiated, maybe we took a lesser 2nd pick in exchange of lifting the protection.

True , but just say no

I bet Florida was the only team to offer a 2023 unprotected first
