GDT #72: 9/4/22 HNIC - 50 in 50

Fun with numbers time...

Auston's 82 game pace of ES goals is 53. Era adjusted to 90-91, thats 58 even strength goals in 82 games...which in fairness to Hull, he didn't play either. He played 78.

So this is only the 2nd best Even Strength goal scoring performance in NHL history that we're watching right now.

Let's be real, the only reason his number isn't retired is that he's an anglo from Toronto.
Preposterous.

Howie Morenz - Mitchell, Ontario
Ken Dryden - Hamilton, Ontario
Bob Gainey - Peterborough, Ontario
Larry Robinson - Winchester, Ontario

All have their numbers retired despited being anglos from Ontario.

If he was Stephane LeShutt from Trois Rivieres instead, the 5th leading Canadiens goal scorer of all time would have arenas all over le belle provence named after him.
Disingenuous.

Former players usually have an arena named after them in their hometowns or somewhere close.

Bobby Orr Community Centre in Parry Sound, Ontario.
Larry Robinson Arena in Ottawa, Ontario.
Centre Dave-Keon in Rouyn-Noranda, Québec.

And yet, you can still find arenas named after great anglo players from Ontario in Montréal :

Aréna Howie-Morenz
Arena Bill-Durnan (Bill Durnan was born in Toronto, Ontario)

5th leading goal scorer all time of a storied franchise does not mean that your number will be retired as we can see with another legendary #22 : Rick Vaive.

Derogative comments about Québécois being racists or intolerants are celebrated by this community.

The normalization of anti-francophone comments on this forum is appalling.

This is wrong.

It's "derogatory"...and sorry, but Quebec is racist as fuck. anybody who's spent any time there knows that.

take a look how they treat natives, for one.

I feel bad.

Not for why you think I should feel bad. But that someone wrote this many words only because their reading comprehension failed them.

As for the last bit...the fuck out of here with that shit. To act like Quebec hockey culture doesn't absolutely prefer francophone hockey players is gaslighting of the highest degree.

I'm open to alternate theories as to why Shutt doesn't have his number retired though...

Watching the extended highlights and really emphasized how good Kally was tonight. He made some great saves when it was close, in addition to the ones mentioned, a Gallagher breakaway plus another two on one rush. Great job. Hopefully lets us get rid of Mrassek and have the solution identified.

I am not claiming that "Quebec hockey culture doesn't absolutely prefer francophone hockey players."
It does prefer francophone hockey players.

This has not been an obstacle to them celebrating and revering legendary anglo players from Ontario.
Or even a non-legendary anglo player from Boston like Nilan for that matter.

And as I demonstrated; this has not been an obstacle to them retiring their jerseys and naming arenas after them.

One does not exclude the other.

I must insist that you cease these derogatory attacks on French hockey fans, k thnx.

I mean, you name guys with massive resumes (Morenz has multiple Harts, Dryden has all the Vezinas, etc) as proof...but when I ask a simple question regarding Shutt, you've ducked it and dodged it.

Shutt has a better resume than some francophone habs with their jerseys retired. I'm suggesting that a bias that you admit is the reason for it. Fan attachment absolutely plays a role in honours like this.

Higher playoff PPG than Maurice or Henri Richard, higher playoff GPG than Beliveau, Cournoyer. Shit, their version of Kevin Lowe from those 70's teams has his number retired.

So again, what other reasons would there be for Shutt to not have his jersey retired other than plain old bias that you've already admitted exists.

You can do all the posturing you want, there are limits to Zeking stats to win an argument.

Maurice Richard
Henri Richard
Jean Beliveau
Yvan Cournoyer

Steve Shutt

————————

Montreal has too many legends to be able to retire all their numbers. Most of them came before Shutt and the others from his generation where more deserving than him.

Sudbury native Ken Campbell believes that there are 5 other Habs players ahead of Steve Shutt in the jersey retirement queue and I doubt he has a language bias against anglos :

FIVE MORE NUMBERS THE MONTREAL CANADIENS SHOULD RETIRE

/convo

Steve Shutt sucks. Adjusted for era Howie Morenz is the only Hab to put up as many goals in a season as Matthews. And that wasn't even hockey.

Go talk about the Habs Gary Leeman in the Cole Caufield thread, not the NHL's god thread.

So again, what other reasons would there be for Shutt to not have his jersey retired other than plain old bias that you've already admitted exists.

maybe unfair, but Shutt was never seen as a driver on his line, but more the beneficiary of being on the same line as Lafleur.

Lafleur soaked up a lot of love, not solely from an Anglo like Shutt but also from a Franco line mate like HOF Jacques Lemaire who also does not have his number retired.

So anyways, less Habs history, moar Auston.

Draisaitl missed a couple games then went scoreless a few games so Matthews left the rest of the Rocket group in the dust.
